CLINICAL DEVELOPMENT FELLOWS (CDFs) IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE WITH SPECIALIST FOCUS ON PRE-HOSPITAL, REMOTE AND RURAL, GLOBAL HEALTH OR GENERAL EMERGENCY MEDICINE

(Post FY2 Level, ST1 – ST2)

About the Posts

We are recruiting Clinical Development Fellows (CDFs) to start in August 2026, although earlier start dates will be considered. Four tailored CDF pathways are available:

  1. General Emergency Medicine (adults and paediatrics)
  2. Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine
  3. Global Health and Emergency Medicine
  4. Remote and Rural Emergency Medicine

Each pathways included dedicated development time in your chosen speciality area. Whether you aspire to become a HEMS doctor, pursue humanitarian work with organisations like MSF, work in expedition settings, or build a strong foundation for ACCS training, these posts are designed to support your progression.

In the supporting statement of your application please make clear which tailored CDF pathway you are interested in and why, as this information will form part of our selection and shortlisting process.

Successful candidates will be contracted for up to 48 hours, with 30 days allocated over the 12-month period for development activities. See the attached job descriptions for more details of how these can be utilised.

About the Emergency Department

The Emergency Department see over 34,000 patients a year and is an allocated Trauma Unit for the South-East Scotland Trauma Network. The hospital has 330 inpatient beds with on-site general medicine, cardiology, intensive care, respiratory, neurology, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, general surgery, urology, ENT, ophthalmology, and dermatology.

The department is staffed with an enthusiastic and progressive team with a clear passion to support our doctors to develop their skills in areas which will benefit their future careers. The department is in the process of developing CESR equivalency pathways and will have opportunities for those that have undertaken junior CDF posts to progress into positions to gain equivalency sign off for the core components of ACCS.

Life in the Scottish Borders

The BGH is situated 30 miles south of Edinburgh in a very picturesque location with access to world famous mountain biking, lovely coastline and hill walking to cater to all levels of fitness and interest.

There are direct public transport links to the capital via a regular train and bus service, as well as ample free parking, making commuting straightforward.
