NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. The role:
The successful applicant would join a friendly team of Biomedical Scientists and support staff and would be responsible for the day-to-day processing and validation of results from patient samples: blood, urine, faeces, tissue biopsies, CSF and other body fluids in specialist and routine laboratory sections in Biochemistry using a range of scientific measurements and technical procedures. The departments within NHS GGC Biochemistry have many highly specialised areas, including the Scottish Trace Element and Micronutrient Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (STEMDRL), Metabolic Biochemistry, Toxicology, Specialist Endocrinology, Point of Care testing and Adult Specialist services.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- There are a number of posts available across the NHSGGC Biochemistry departments
- The advertised posts are for the South Sector, covering Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Victoria ACH and Clyde Sector, covering Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital and Vale of Leven Hospital
- For successful candidates on our reserve list, you may be offered a future post at North Sector covering laboratories at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel Hospitals and Stobhill Hospital
- These are permanent posts with a combination of full-time hours and part-time hours available; these hours will be worked over a 24/7 shift pattern after completion of a suitable training period
- Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part-time hours
Key responsibilities:
- Provide a high quality specialist diagnostic service through the analysis validation and authorisation of patient results to support effective diagnosis and treatment
- Work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team to prioritise workload deliver agreed turnaround times and respond to urgent clinical situations
- Perform routine and specialist analytical techniques using complex automated and manual laboratory equipment in line with SOPs and UKAS standards
- Act as a mentor and supervisor to trainee biomedical scientists medical laboratory assistants and support staff
- Provide specialist advice to clinical and nursing colleagues on test selection sample requirements and interpretation of results
- Participate in quality assurance audit service improvement and the development and validation of new methods and technologies
- Contribute to out of hours service provision where required maintaining professional judgement and first line responsibility for service delivery
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- State registration with the HCPC is mandatory for this post, along with a BSc Honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, which is acceptable for HCPC registration
- You should have formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline-specific procedures and evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation and learning through reflective practice
- It is essential that you can evidence your continuing professional development, and you should have effective written, organisational, verbal and keyboard/IT skills
- The department is fully committed to continued professional and personal development and will support the successful applicant in achieving their full potential
- Candidates without a specialist portfolio may be considered for appointment under AFC Annex 21 terms and conditions and will start on a percentage of the Band 6 scale depending on experience. As specialist portfolios are a requirement for this post, they must be completed before progression to the full band 6 salary
