The role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the Haematology and Blood Transfusion service within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. You will play a vital role in delivering a safe, responsive and high‑quality diagnostic service that directly supports patient care across acute and community settings. Working within one of the largest and most diverse NHS Boards in the UK, you will be part of a supportive, forward‑thinking multidisciplinary team. Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Royal Alexandra Hospital
  • There are two posts available: one full-time 36-hour post and one part-time 29.7-hour post
  • Shift patterns are across 24 hours, 7 days of the week to maintain the needs of the service
  • Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part-time hours

Key responsibilities:

  • Analyse, validate and authorise routine and complex Haematology and Blood Transfusion investigations
  • Provide specialist scientific and technical advice to clinicians to support diagnosis and treatment decisions
  • Perform and interpret blood grouping, compatibility testing and issue blood and blood products safely
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment to ensure service continuity
  • Maintain high standards of quality through adherence to SOPs, quality control and audit processes
  • Prioritise workload effectively to meet turnaround times, including emergency and out of hours work
  • Contribute to training, supervision and support of trainees and support staff within the department

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Accredited honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Relevant specialist diploma or equivalent knowledge and experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion
  • Demonstrable experience of working within a busy diagnostic laboratory environment
  • Sound knowledge of laboratory quality systems, health and safety and risk management
  • Strong analytical, interpretive and problem‑solving skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Effective communication and IT skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
