The role:
Specialist Biomedical Scientists (SBMS) in Microbiology are responsible for the technical aspects of diagnosing infection and determining appropriate anti-infective therapy by applying specialist microbiological methods, using the most up-to-date scientific analysis in conjunction with traditional methods of culture, microscopy and specialist techniques. The SBMS post is responsible for carrying out the duties required to provide an efficient microbiology service that is necessary for effective patient care and to supervise, instruct, train and act as a mentor to less experienced biomedical scientists and support staff. They will also be required to offer specialist advice and guidance on the services available to users and to provide information about the analyses that are performed. The Diagnostic Clinical Microbiology Service for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde is delivered from two sites: Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. The laboratories provide a full and comprehensive Microbiology service to the population it serves, including hospital-based users, General Practice, the Private sector and to colleagues in the University and Teaching sectors.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Glasgow Royal Infirmary
- Across 7 days of the week
- Inclusive of evenings, weekends, on-call and public holidays
Key responsibilities:
- Perform complex and specialist microbiological tests to support the diagnosis and management of infection
- Interpret laboratory results and authorise findings using specialist knowledge and professional judgement
- Provide expert technical advice to clinicians GPs and other service users as required
- Operate troubleshoot and maintain highly complex laboratory analysers and equipment
- Supervise support and train trainee biomedical scientists and laboratory support staff
- Ensure all work complies with quality standards health and safety requirements and accreditation regulations
- Contribute to service improvement audit research and the development of standard operating procedures
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- IBMS accredited BSc honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent suitable for HCPC registration
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist
- Successful completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology or equivalent experience
- Extensive practical experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory environment
- In depth knowledge of specialist diagnostic techniques including automated microbiology systems
- Commitment to continuing professional development and maintaining specialist competence
- Ability to work independently supervise others and prioritise workload in a 24 seven service
