The Position:

A sonographer in NHS Orkney is expected to work as an autonomous practitioner who performs ultrasound examinations without supervision, clinical support is provided by NHS Grampian.

Interpretation of findings in real time to produce and issue independent diagnostic reports for the scans they have performed and communicate findings appropriately to referrers.

In addition, they help manage the clinical workflow by vetting referrals and prioritising inpatient or urgent work. They maintain governance standards by protecting patient confidentiality, keeping accurate records, completing audit or self-audit, and maintaining ongoing CPD, and they may also contribute to teaching or mentoring trainees and other staff.

The Candidate:

We are looking for a sonographer with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, who can work confidently as an autonomous practitioner (often as a lone worker) and use sound clinical judgement to interpret findings accurately in real time.

You will be organised and able to prioritise competing demands, stay calm under pressure and manage urgent or inpatient work, while maintaining high standards of professionalism, confidentiality and governance.

You will also work well with the wider multidisciplinary team (including remote support), and show a clear commitment to quality improvement, audit and ongoing CPD, with a willingness to support learning and share expertise when required.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with NHS Orkney.
