Band 5 Orthoptist – 1 Post (Full Time, 36 hours per week)

Base: Ninewells Hospital, Dundee
Travel throughout Tayside required

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Tayside Orthoptic Department as a newly qualified or soon‑to‑qualify Band 5 Orthoptist. You will become part of a supportive and experienced Orthoptic team consisting of 9 Orthoptists and 2 Orthoptic Assistants, providing a comprehensive orthoptic and visual field service across the Tayside region.

Our service delivers a wide range of clinical activity, including:

  • General orthoptic clinics
  • Community paediatric clinics in partnership with hospital optometrists
  • Functional vision assessments
  • Post‑stroke orthoptic assessment
  • Orthoptic-led vision screening (See4School) for children across Tayside

We work closely with three ophthalmologists to provide specialist services, including:

  • Paediatric ophthalmology clinics, including JIA screening
  • Adult motility services (botulinum toxin, adjustable sutures, tertiary referrals)
  • Orthoptic-led Thyroid Eye Disease clinic

Although based at Ninewells Hospital, you will also contribute to clinics throughout Tayside. The ability to travel is therefore essential.

We are an accredited orthoptic practice placement site and regularly support students from all UK universities. Ninewells is a teaching hospital, and as part of your role you will have opportunities to support the teaching of junior doctors, medical students, nursing students and pre-registration optometrists.

We welcome applications from new graduates and those due to register soon.
You should be keen to develop your skills across a broad range of clinical areas. Excellent communication skills and a commitment to patient‑centred care are essential. As a new graduate, you will receive Support from a friendly and forward‑thinking team along with regular supervision sessions and access to CPD opportunities to enable you to work through your Flying Start and preceptorship.

Essential Criteria

  • Diploma/Degree in Orthoptics
  • HCPC registration (or pending registration for final‑year students)
