The role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for Band 5 Registered Learning Disability nurses to join the Specialist Learning Disability Inpatient nursing team in NHS GGC. The Specialist Learning Disability Service within NHS GG&C provides assessment/treatment inpatient services to people with a learning disability who experience mental ill health and or associated challenging behaviour / complex needs. The role will support people to achieve health outcomes by way of specialist therapeutic interventions.
The post holder will provide evidence based, high quality nursing care working within a multi-disciplinary framework, working with people with learning disabilities who may present with mental health problems, challenging behaviour and/or additional complex needs including development of individual positive behavioural support plans
The post holder will have direct responsibility as a Named or Associate Nurse for a defined client group, facilitating assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation of care and discharge.
The role will also include taking charge of the ward or any equivalent sphere of nursing in the absence of the Senior Charge Nurse/Charge Nurse.
The post holder will carry out these responsibilities professionally and compassionately with minimal supervision.
Previous experience working with people who have Learning Disabilities and Mental Health Issues is required.
RNLD or RMN (with relevant experience) Essential.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
There are 2x permanent posts available at 36 hours per week.
The location is Munro ward, Stobhill.
The shift pattern is day/night shift.
Key responsibilities:
CLINICAL
- Assists with the overall care, support and management of patients including participation in Named and Associate nursing models of care.
- Provides comprehensive reports both verbally and in writing to the senior charge nurse/charge nurse, medical staff and other disciplines as necessary, including maintenance of patients’ records. Maintaining a high standard of written and verbal communication in accordance with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and The Nursing and Midwifery Council standards and guidelines.
- Observes and adheres to all current Mental Health legislation, i.e. Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 and Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000.
- Covers in the absence of senior colleagues, providing relevant care and taking charge of the ward when necessary.
- Is aware of and adheres to all Local, HSCP, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and National Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.
- Maintains good communication with patients, patients’ relatives and representatives and other professional colleagues, adhering to all confidentiality requirements.
- To respond when required immediately to incidents and emergencies both within and out with own area.
- Safeguards the interests and wellbeing of patients at all times, adhering to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde policies and The Nurses and Midwives Council, Code of Professional Conduct.
EDUCATIONAL as part of clinical component
- Participates in staff development initiatives eg Personal development plans etc and teaching programmes, directs and supervises junior staff and assists in the teaching of learners.
MANAGERIAL
- Supports the senior charge nurse in the immediate management of suggestions or complaints.
- When in charge of shift supervises staff rostered on duty (Other qualified staff, Nursing Assistants, Students, Support Workers), organises own workload & delegates work, alters routine as and when required meeting unpredictable needs of the patients/ward.
- General management duties carried out on a day to day basis
HEALTH & SAFETY as part of managerial component
Is aware of and adheres to all relevant Health and Safety regulations, including e.g. Fire Procedures, Moving and Handling techniques and procedures, Management of Aggression and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations.
