Job Advert

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

This is a Fixed term post for August 2027

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Development Fellow within the Trauma and Orthopaedic Service in Clyde. This post is well suited to a doctor who has completed Foundation Training (or equivalent) and wishes to gain further experience prior to applying for surgical specialty training.

To support this career pathway, the successful applicant will be allocated a Clinical/Educational Supervisor. Regular meetings will take place throughout the post to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) based on the appointee’s previous experience and career goals, and to support their progress towards specialty training applications.

The successful applicant will undertake predominantly ward-based clinical duties while benefiting from 30 sessions of protected professional development time during the year. This time can be used to attend outpatient clinics and theatre sessions in order to gain additional orthopaedic experience and develop a competitive portfolio for surgical training applications. There will also be opportunities to develop and deliver teaching for medical students and junior colleagues, as well as to participate in research and quality improvement projects within the department.

Applicants must have recent experience (within the last 12 months) working in a surgical specialty at FY2 level or above, or equivalent. They should demonstrate strong clinical skills alongside effective time management and clinical prioritisation skills to work within a busy orthopaedic ward environment. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate successful completion of Immediate Life Support (ILS) training.

The Orthopaedic Service in Clyde is delivered across Royal Alexandra Hospital and Inverclyde Royal Hospital. The trauma unit is based at Royal Alexandra Hospital and provides acute inpatient and day-case trauma services. Inpatient elective orthopaedic services are delivered at Inverclyde Royal Hospital. Trauma and elective outpatient clinics take place at both sites.

The successful applicant will participate in the junior out-of-hours rota, which attracts the appropriate out-of-hours pay supplement. The rota is a resident on-call rota currently shared between 14 resident doctors and includes internal cover for annual and study leave. Out-of-hours shifts take place at both hospital sites, and the successful applicant will therefore be required to work across both locations.

This post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will not be recognised for training by NHS Education for Scotland.

AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can be great for planning and preparing your application, but your answers must be your own.

  • Show us the real you: Your application should reflect your skills, experience, and motivations authentically.
  • Use AI wisely: It’s fine to use AI for ideas or to check spelling and grammar, but don’t let it write your answers.
  • Why this matters: Applications that rely on AI-generated content may be withdrawn. By applying, you confirm your responses are based on your own knowledge and achievements.

Tip: Think of AI as a helper, not a substitute. We want to understand you, not an AI tool.
