The role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in Day Surgery Unit/In-Patient Theatres at the IRH. Band 5 Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner. We are looking for an enthusiastic registered nurse or operating department practitioner to work within Day Surgery Unit and In- patient theatre. The Day Surgery Unit consists of one theatre, one minor room, recovery and ward area. In Patient theatre consists of 6 operating theatres, and a recovery room. The unit provides peri- op care for patients undergoing a range of surgical procedures including General Surgery, elective Orthopaedics, ophthalmology and cardiology. Within Day Surgery Unit surgeries consist of gynaecology, urology, dental, orthopaedics, ENT and plastic surgery.
As part of the multidisciplinary team, you will have responsibility for assessment of care needs and the development of a programme of care and the implementation and evaluation of these programmes ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients within the perioperative department. The ability to work on your own initiative but also as part of an integrated team is required.
The Clyde Theatres undertake a Perioperative dual training programme and Multi-speciality training supported by the GGC Centre of Clinical Perioperative Excellence. You will be supported in post-registration education by the Perioperative Education Teams and will have access to training and education pertinent to the job. Furthermore, you will be expected where necessary to engage in multi-site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to achieve the needs of the service. As part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s pre-employment checking for all appointed candidates, evidence of current NMC/HCPC registration will be required prior to start date for Band 5 posts. You should therefore note candidates who are unable to provide confirmation of current NMC/HCPC registration, in line with projected start date for this post, may not be shortlisted for interview.
This post requires PVG Scheme Membership/Disclosure Scotland Check for all posts. We can expand your skills and knowledge across a fascinating and diverse range of cases. Our enthusiastic GGC education teams will guide and support your learning and education development in the Perioperative Roles. You will be a First Level Registered Nurse trained in general nursing or adult nursing or a Registered Operating Department Practitioner. Experience in Scrub/theatre practice and/or Anaesthetics and/or Recovery is desirable.
You need to have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
This is a permanent part-time post of 17.8 hours per week.
Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.
Based at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.
The work pattern is to be confirmed.
Key responsibilities:
- Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates programmes of care with reference to patients, without direct supervision.
- Carries out and maintains the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team / Primary Care Services and Carers.
- Requires to act as Team Leader on a regular basis taking responsibility for a defined group of patients within clinical specialty.
- In the absence of senior staff, take charge of the department for the management of the daily responsibilities, including work allocation, deployment and supervision of staff, to ensure smooth running of the area.
- In conjunction with the senior nurse ensures that nursing resource is utilised efficiently by managing on duty rosters, short notice sickness absence and manpower resources to comply with agreed policy and procedure.
- Maintains effective management of ward/department resources including stores, supplies and medicines.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- NMC Registration Level 1
- Good communication practices
- Good organisational skills
- Able to work without supervision/own initiative
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Effective decision making and problem solving skills.
- Able to accommodate the demands of the post with flexible working as required

The postholder is required to demonstrate flexibility by working within a service which runs over a 7 day week. Furthermore, the postholder is expected, where necessary, to engage in multi-site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde in order to achieve the needs of the service.
