The Role
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Band 8a Orthopaedic Extended Scope Physiotherapist to play a key role within our dynamic Orthopaedic team within NHS Lanarkshire. This senior clinical leadership position requires expert autonomous practice, advanced diagnostic reasoning, and the ability to manage complex orthopaedic presentations across a diverse patient caseload.
As an integral member of the Orthopaedic team, you will provide specialist assessment and management, including advanced imaging interpretation, injection therapy (where appropriate), and support decision making for surgical and non surgical pathways. You will work collaboratively with Orthopaedic Consultants, other stakeholders, and wider MDT colleagues to drive high quality, timely and patient centred care.
In addition to expert clinical practice, you will lead on service development initiatives, contribute to pathway redesign, support governance activity, and provide clinical leadership, education, and mentorship across the Orthopaedic workforce. This role offers the opportunity to help shape strategic service improvements and influence the future direction of Orthopaedic care within the organisation.

In this key role, you will:
- To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work including direct and indirect patient care including work outside the normal scope of practice of a Physiotherapist.
- To assess capacity, gain valid consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent.
- Act independently to assess, analyse, clinical and non-clinical information, and provide specialist and comprehensive clinical diagnosis for individual patients. This would include patients with complex presentations.
- To determine the necessity for additional investigations, Physiotherapy interventions or the need for referral to other disciplines including assessment / treatment by rheumatologists or orthopaedic surgeon. This would include advising patients on surgical intervention and patients with complex presentations.
What You'll Bring:
- Registered Physiotherapist with valid HCPC Registration
- Educated to/working towards/operating at Masters Level
- Be able to demonstrate knowledge of NHS Scotland’s Leadership Qualities framework or equivalent framework
- Management knowledge gained through experience and continuous professional development
- A driving licence is required; this must be a full UK/EU/EEA licence.
