The role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in Day Surgery Unit/In-Patient Theatres at the IRH. Band 6 Registered Charge Nurse or Charge Operating Department Practitioner. We are looking for an enthusiastic registered nurse or operating department practitioner to work within Day Surgery Unit and In- patient theatre. The Day Surgery Unit consists of one theatre, one minor room, recovery and ward area. In Patient theatre consists of 6 operating theatres, and a recovery room. The unit provides peri- op care for patients undergoing a range of surgical procedures including General Surgery, elective Orthopaedics, ophthalmology and cardiology. Within Day Surgery Unit surgeries consist of gynaecology, urology, dental, orthopaedics, ENT and plastic surgery.
As part of the multidisciplinary team, you will have responsibility for assessment of care needs and the development of a programme of care and the implementation and evaluation of these programmes ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients within the perioperative department. The ability to work on your own initiative but also as part of an integrated team is required.
The Clyde Theatres undertake a Perioperative dual training programme and Multi-speciality training supported by the GGC Centre of Clinical Perioperative Excellence. You will be supported in post-registration education by the Perioperative Education Teams and will have access to training and education pertinent to the job. Furthermore, you will be expected where necessary to engage in multi-site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to achieve the needs of the service.
As part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s pre-employment checking for all appointed candidates, evidence of current NMC/HCPC registration will be required prior to start date for Band 5 posts. You should therefore note candidates who are unable to provide confirmation of current NMC/HCPC registration, in line with projected start date for this post, may not be shortlisted for interview. This post requires PVG Scheme Membership/Disclosure Scotland Check for all posts. We can expand your skills and knowledge across a fascinating and diverse range of cases. Our enthusiastic GGC education teams will guide and support your learning and education development in the Perioperative Roles. You will be a First Level Registered Nurse trained in general nursing or adult nursing or a Registered Operating Department Practitioner. Experience in Scrub/theatre practice and/or Anaesthetics and/or Recovery is desirable.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
This is a permanent part-time post of 30 hours per week.
Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.
Based at Inverclyde Royal Hospital- Day Surgery Unit.
The work pattern is to be confirmed.
Key responsibilities:
- Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates programmes of care with reference to patients, without direct supervision.
- Assist the ward/department manager to facilitate change processes within the area whether clinical or managerial in nature to ensure that the ward/department team foster innovative practice and meet patient needs.
- In the absence of the ward/department manager, the post holder will supervise, deploy and develop all staff to ensure efficient management of a rapidly changing and developing nursing service.
- Co-ordinates and carries out the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team / Primary Care Services and Carers.
- Ensure that all written documentation within the ward/department area is clear, concise, timely and complies with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping.
- Establish, maintain and develop effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives.
- Act as a positive role model to ensure patients receive high quality care.
- In conjunction with the Ward/Department Manager to set, monitor and evaluate standards of care within the defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the Ward, Directorate and Division to ensure adherence to, and delivery of a high quality service.
- Receive, label, document, record and dispatch specimens according to Directorate and hospital polices and procedures
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- NMC Registration Level 1
- Good communication practices
- Good organisational skills
- Able to work without supervision/own initiative
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Effective decision making and problem solving skills.
- Possession of/or evidence of the potential of working towards a first degree
- Self motivated, articulate and assertive
- A positive and interested outlook personally and professionally, with skills in the management of nurses and their
- delivery of care.
- Able to accommodate the demands of the post with flexible working as required
- Time management skills
The postholder is required to demonstrate flexibility by working within a service which runs over a 7 day week. Furthermore, the postholder is expected, where necessary, to engage in multi-site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde in order to achieve the needs of the service.
