The role:
The Mental Health Assessment Unit (MHAU), as part of the Unscheduled Care Service, seeks to provide an exciting opportunity for two Band 6 Registered Mental Nurses to take up permanent positions. The MHAU offers a same-day face-to-face assessment, diagnosis and treatment option to those who would ordinarily come to the attention of emergency services. Referrals are accepted from Emergency Departments within GG&C, Police Scotland, Scottish Ambulance Service, GP’s and NHS24. Assessments are offered within the units, and an outreach facility is available where indicated.
The role would provide you with an opportunity to work within a dynamic and exciting environment, liaising with professionals from other agencies. A robust teaching programme is embedded within the service. The MHAUs are based on the Leverndale and Stobhill hospital sites.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- This is a permanent post
- Working 36 hours over 3, 12 hour shifts over 7 days.
- You will be based at the McLeod Suite, Leverndale Hospital, 510 Crookston Road, Glasgow G53 7 TU
Key responsibilities:
As a member of the Unscheduled Care Team / Mental Health Assessment Units within Mental Health Services, you will work closely and collaboratively with colleagues across all disciplines and partner agencies throughout NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
In this role, you will support individuals presenting in crisis who have complex mental health, physical, and social care needs. You will be involved in delivering responsive care and home treatment interventions over a 24-hour period where required, as well as providing a specialist mental health service to Emergency Departments and inpatient services within the general hospital setting. You will also offer specialist advice and guidance to multidisciplinary colleagues, including consultant medical staff, helping to support safe and effective decision-making.
You will play a key role in supporting timely assessment and access to mental health inpatient beds across NHS GG&C, including coordinating hospital admissions when this is required.
Given the fast-paced and responsive nature of Unscheduled Care and Mental Health Assessment Units, you will work closely with the Nurse Team Leader, supporting the deployment of staff resources in line with patient need.
You will take responsibility for prioritising and managing your own workload, ensuring resources are used effectively so that patient needs are met in a timely and appropriate way. You will be professionally accountable to the Nurse Team Leader for the organisation and delivery of your work.
In addition, you will be expected to develop and maintain a strong understanding of the interface between inpatient services and the wider community mental health teams across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, working collaboratively to ensure seamless care for patients across services.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Registered Mental Health Nurse with current Level 1 registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Educated to a minimum of degree level in Mental Health Nursing, or able to demonstrate equivalent relevant experience in a similar clinical setting
- The successful candidates will ideally have excellent communication skills and be familiar with completing comprehensive Mental Health assessments.
- Awareness of community services and resources would be advantageous
- A driving licence is desirable
