The role:

We have a vacancy for a Band 6 Clinical Technologist at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre provides an integrated cancer management and treatment service for patients from the West of Scotland and beyond. Facilities are situated in the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and the Tom Wheldon Building on the Gartnavel Hospitals site and at the Lanarkshire Beatson satellite centre on the Monklands District Hospital site. Approximately 6500 courses of radiotherapy are provided annually requiring over 100,000 patient attendances. The Radiotherapy Department is equipped with the most up-to-date facilities currently available.

The Band 6 Specialist Clinical Technologist is required to design and manufacture specialised treatment delivery aids and positioning devices crucial to the accurate delivery of radiotherapy treatment. Other duties include patient assessment, pre-treatment and treatment planning procedures, the manufacture of customised ostalloy shielding blocks, clinical audit and research and development projects. He/she will deputise for the section manager and is responsible for the effective operational duties of the mould room clinical technical service. They will be based either at the Gartnavel campus or at the satellite centre as there may occasionally be the need to transfer between sites for operational reasons.

  • Location based in Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full-time position (36 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern for this post are Monday - Friday, 08.30-17.00

Key responsibilities:

  • Participates in the Radiotherapy Quality Management System for all work including the monitoring and signing of work carried out and the checking procedure of such work by all staff.
  • Contributes to the writing of new work instructions and protocols, reviewing and making changes to existing work instructions to maintain the high standards set within the Beatson Oncology Centre.
  • Assists in COSHH Risk Assessment regularly and complies with all safety precautions necessary.
  • Ensures implementation of policies and proposes changes to practices for their own work area
  • Uses specialised knowledge and expertise to promote and develop very high professional standards in all aspects of work within this Department.
  • Specialist Clinical Technologists in Mould Room provide advice relating to pre-treatment planning procedures to other staff groups
  • Involved in planning and organising workloads to meet clinical deadlines for patients attending Simulator, CT Simulator and Radiotherapy Treatment Units.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • A Degree in Medical Technology or relevant discipline is essential. An HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent degree will be accepted provided the knowledge, training and experience profile matches the requirements of the post.
  • Registration in the Voluntary Register for Clinical Technologists (VRCT) held by the institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) is desirable at this level. Membership of IPEM, at an appropriate level, is desirable.
  • Minimum 5 years experience post degree/HND (3 years as a Practitioner Clinical Technologist) is desirable
  • The post holder will have specialist knowledge, clinical and technical skills acquired through short theoretical courses and relevant practical experience in a broad range of techniques.
  • The post holder at this level will continue to develop their specialist clinical technical skills. The knowledge gained by professional qualifications, practical experience and training are required to keep up to date with changing technology in the treatment of cancer patients.
  • Knowledge of Anatomy, Physics and Radiotherapy Planning techniques.
  • Effective communication skills. 8 Ability to work on own initiative. 9 Experience acquired by working closely with clinicians/practitioners in specialist areas
