Position:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a (Consultant Psychiatrist) within our General Adult Liaison Psychiatry based at Crosshouse and Ayr University hospitals

Hours and Shift Pattern:

32 hours ( 8 sessions – mon to thurs 9-5)

This post is offered on a permanent basis

What you will do:

The role involves providing senior medical leadership within the Liaison Psychiatry Team and delivering specialist psychiatric input for referrals from University Hospital Crosshouse, Ayr Hospital, and the Emergency Department. The postholder will work closely with multidisciplinary mental health teams and health and social care partners, act as Responsible Medical Officer for patients under mental health legislation in the general hospital, and undertake Mental Health Act and Adults with Incapacity Act responsibilities. The position includes teaching and supervising junior medical staff, participating in clinical audit, appraisal, job planning, and maintaining compliance with NHS Ayrshire & Arran clinical governance standards. The post also requires participation in the consultant on‑call rota, approximately 1 in 26.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

The Consultant in General Adult Liaison Psychiatry at University Hospital Crosshouse must hold full GMC registration with a licence to practise, MRCPsych with an endorsement in Liaison Psychiatry, and be approved or eligible for approval under Section 22 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003. The role requires broad psychiatric experience, strong communication and negotiation skills, effective team working with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, good organisational and time‑management abilities, IT literacy, and high‑quality record keeping. Applicants are expected to demonstrate ongoing CPD, engagement in teaching and training, participation in clinical audit, and contribution to wider clinical governance. Desirable attributes include extensive liaison psychiatry experience, partnership‑agency collaboration, interest in medical education, research publications, service development or management experience, and a flexible, open, and collaborative interpersonal style.
