The role:

The opportunity has arisen for a band 5 Staff Nurse within the Paediatric haemato-oncology day unit Ward 2B Schiehallion Day Care, Royal Hospital for Children. The paediatric haematology/oncology unit provides a regional service for the treatment of childhood leukaemias as well as a range of other malignant and non-malignant hematological disorders and oncological conditions. We are the paediatric haematology and oncology reference centre for the West of Scotland. Futhermore, we provide a national service for Paediatric Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant. We also host the Scottish Paediatric Molecular Radiotherapy service.

The function of the day care ward is to provide patient specific care to children requiring assessment, investigations and treatment for various haematology and oncology conditions. We provide specialised care for children requiring bone marrow transplant and follow up care for those who have been the recipient of the same. Admission via the day care unit can be both elective and emergency and we work closely with the paediatric haemato-oncology inpatient ward to facilitate excellent patient care. Treatment is provided to children ranging from birth to 18 years of age and we liaise closely with other Haematology /Oncology centers participating in shared care with other units to achieve best patient care delivery.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible for the delivery of excellent patient care within the clinical area in line with local policy. This will require the assessment, implementation and evaluation of programs of care within the paediatric haematology/oncology remit. They will play an active role in health promotion within this patient group and will provide holistic care to both patients and their families throughout their treatment.

Duties will involve delivery of excellent patient care by managing and prioritising tasks alongside team members. SACT competence and knowledge of chemotherapy treatment protocols is essential. The ability to work closely with and educate families on their care and plan patient follow up appointments in line with individual patient protocols will be the post holder’s responsibility.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

This is a fixed-term post of 12 months.

Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.

Based in Ward 2B, Schiehallion day care, RHC.

The shift pattern is Monday to Friday, 08:30-19:30.

Key responsibilities:

Communication

The nurse will apply the principles of good communication, which justify the trust and confidence of the public, and will establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, relatives, nursing colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team.

Practice in accordance with NMC code of Professional conduct, Guidelines and Division policies. Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication with patients, family and staff, demonstrating a caring and understanding approach at all times. Ensure patient and family confidentiality is respected at all times. Participate in clinical communication/education of children, parents and colleagues. Participate in multi-professional decision making concerning children and their families.

Ensure that all nursing documentation, which reflects care delivery is accurate and legible. Demonstrate the ability to interpret and report changes in care needs. Develop presentation and IT technology skills and participate fully in ward and multidisciplinary meetings.

Quality Assured Patient Care

The nurse will deliver a quality assured systematic approach to patient care. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and clinical competence, encouraging others to maintain a high standard of patient care. Is able to self-assess own and others’ performance, recognizing abilities and limitations.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the individual child and family needs when participating in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care. Demonstrate the ability to ensure that patient care is individualized to encompass the cultural and spiritual needs of the child and family. Recognise the need for parental involvement in patient care. Respect and maintain the confidentiality of children, their families and colleagues. Participate in audit and research projects to ensure practice is evidence based.

Demonstrate an awareness of legal and professional responsibilities within nursing practice. Demonstrate an awareness of effective use of resource, including staff, supplies and departmental budget. Is supportive and approachable to all staff members, and participates in collaborative care delivery. Participates in the delivery of high dependency nursing care to haemato-oncology patients and those preparing for or having received Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant. Participates (once competent) in specialized haemato-oncology extended nursing duties such as chemotherapy delivery.

Participates (once competent) in the care of the patient receiving kidney function test, adhering to local rules for administration of radioactive isotope. Provides telephone support, and advice while the patient is at home. Advice given via telephone to GP’s, parents, and schools etc Provides (once competent) appropriate clinical advice via Telephone Triage Line to patients, their parents or carers. Facilitates teaching & education of children & their families to administer drugs safely at home. Reports untoward incidents to senior colleagues.
