The role:
The GG&C Audiology Service offers specialised clinical, rehabilitative, and technical support to patients referred through different referral pathways. As a band 6 Audiologist, your responsibilities include providing both complex and routine audiology services. You will mainly focus on specialised assessments, patient rehabilitation, as well as providing support to ENT Services as directed by the local Audiology Team Lead.
You will be expected to maintain high standards of patient-centred care at all times. You’ll also assist the Head of Audiology in meeting service goals, managing waiting times, and implementing work programs. Duties can take place in various settings primarily in large district hospitals but also occasionally in health centres, community hospitals, nursing homes, or patients’ homes, with your location adjusted to meet service needs.
To be eligible, you must have an Audiology BSc or equivalent (for example, MSc Audiology or BAAT Parts 1 & 2 with NC Physiological Measurement) along with proven post-qualifying clinical experience. Full registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science (RCCP) is required or with the HCPC Health & Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist (Audiology). This role involves a 36-hour work week, with possible changes to your schedule depending on service demands. Typically, shifts are scheduled over five days or four days compressed (subject to specific sites/teams) but these hours may vary based on the needs of the service.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
There are 4x full-time permanent posts available at 36 hours per week at the below locations:
1x Gartnavel General Hospital
1x Glasgow Royal Infirmary
2x New Victoria Ambulatory Care Hospital
The shift pattern is 5 days, Monday to Friday or 4 days compressed (site dependent).
Key responsibilities:
Clinical:
- To carry out a comprehensive medical and audiological history, examine patients using otoscopy and makes professional decisions for further assessment and intervention based upon history and assessment results.
- To perform specialist diagnostic audiological assessments of patients with symptoms of hearing loss, vertigo and tinnitus which may include those with complex physical needs, learning difficulties, sensory impairment (many with multiple disabilities). Test techniques used include both behavioural and objective test techniques.
- To evaluate and interpret test results to allow formulation of an individual management plan.
- Communicates assessments results to parents, carers and other relevant professionals and advises them of appropriate options for audiological management.
- To obtain accurate and safe ear impressions and prescribes the ear mould type, material and modifications required for their hearing aid provision based on individual need.
- To identify the need for hearing aid provision and rehabilitation. Hearing aid technology provided includes standard and non-standard analogue or digital signal processing (DSP). Provision includes:
-Performing comprehensive audiological diagnostic assessments and real ear measurements.
-Prescribing and programming the most appropriate hearing aid for hearing loss .
- To educate and continually support patients, their families, carers on correct use and maintenance of aid and providing them with information and support on how the patient and their family can cope better with hearing loss
- Assesses and monitors the current prescription and function of patients’ hearing aids. This includes:
- Performing further comprehensive audiological diagnostic assessments to determine stability of hearing loss and real ear measures to account for changes in the ear canal characteristics which may impact on the hearing aid fitting.
- Evaluates hearing aid function to identify any problems
- Re-evaluate hearing aid prescription based on the newly obtained assessment results.
- Where required, to counsel and discuss child’s hearing loss with child and parents/carers and adapting the management plan to address current needs.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- State registration with RCCP (Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists)
- BSc in Audiology equivalent (e.g. BAAT part I and II professional and competency examinations)
- Significant post qualification experience in an audiology service and able to demonstrate up to date knowledge in audiology practice, assessment technqiques, hearing aid provision and rehabilitation of patients.
- Maintenance of continuing professional development in accordance with the requirements of the regulatory body by attending internal and external training courses and events
- Highly developed knowledge of audiology to including both auditory and vestibular functionality
- Ability to work autonomously and manage a caseload effectively
- Excellent communication skills
- Can demonstrate effective patient handling skills, able to reassure in a compassionate way, empathise and respect our patients.
- Excellent people management skills
- Excellent teaching skills
- Ability to communicate appropriately with hearing impaired children and adults
- Awareness of needs and concerns of the ‘Deaf’ Community
- Ability to motivate other staff
- Good keyboard skills
