The role:

The Victoria Day Surgery Theatre Suite is a modern purpose built unit consisting of 8 Theatres, a dedicated admission and discharge area and a 23hour ward area. The service supports a variety of specialties including General Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Gynaecology and Plastics.

The Department is looking to recruit a Band 7 Clinical Leader to our Admission and Discharge (2nd Stage Recovery) and 23 hour, 12-bedded ward (Ward 3). This role is essential to the safe and efficient running of our theatre suite and to ensuring same day discharge wherever possible for patients.

We are looking to recruit a passionate, motivated Band 7 to lead quality improvement, promote a high-quality patient experience and support efficient patient flow. The post holder will play a key role in delivering a seamless perioperative journey for patients and clinical colleagues, identifying opportunities for improvement and driving positive change.

The successful candidate will have the motivation, determination and vision working closely with the wider SCN team and Multi Disciplinary Team. They will support the implementation of clinical guidelines for discharge-led criteria and processes that enable timely same-day discharge. You must be able to demonstrate experience of working within a complex, multidisciplinary clinical environment and have the ability to lead confidently in a dynamic setting. You will have excellent leadership qualities and be an effective communicator. This role requires the ability to manage conflicting pressures in a professional and calm manner and be able to work in a highly pressured environment while maintaining a can do attitude.
You must be able to demonstrate skills that support staffing such as H.R. processes, capability processes and absence management.

We require a highly skilled, knowledgeable and passionate leader to ensure the safe delivery of person centred care and you will be required to lead and manage a large cohort of staff to enable this.

You would be expected to support departmental, operational, administrative and management duties responding to taking action and escalating appropriately when necessary. You will be expected to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues across the South Sector and will require to support the multidisciplinary team members to take forward improvements to our service.

Key responsibilities:

  • Participate in the setting, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of perioperative practice within the Department.
  • Be responsible for the supervision of staff and direct/assist with the clinical teaching of qualified nursing, operating department practitioners and post-registration nursing staff undergoing specialist qualification.
  • Maintains effective communication with patients, relatives/carers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared and patient needs are met.
  • Demonstrates awareness of research and implements evidence-based practice.
  • Provides clinical support and solutions by troubleshooting areas of clinical concern on a daily basis.
  • Ensure all care delivered is relevant and up to date.
  • Responsible for providing report on monthly theatre utilisation to Clinical Service Manager and the Lead Nurse.
  • Be responsible for the co-ordination of the recruitment process and participate in the selection of staff.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of staff personnel files and for the induction and orientation of new staff to the department.
  • Take responsibility for following NHS GG&C policy in relation to optimising attendance management.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (AHP).
  • Educated to degree level (desirable).
  • Experience within Theatres/Surgery/Inpatient or Day Surgery environment.
  • Proven senior managerial and clinical skills.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
