The Role
The appointee will join a team who provide a comprehensive Laboratory and Clinical Haematology service to the Borders region.
Out of hours cover is regional across Lothian and the Borders.
The post holder will be expected to participate in all aspects of the Clinical and Laboratory services at the BGH, in collaboration with existing Consultant staff. This will include a consultative service to other Hospital Specialties. Laboratory commitments will include working to ensure UKAS accreditation.
It is expected that the post holder will have an interest in Haemato-oncology which is a major component of clinical work.
The post holder will be expected to take an active role participating in, and developing the Southeast Scotland managed clinical network for haematological malignancies.
Candidates must hold MRCPath and must also be fully registered with the General Medical Council, preferably in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.

Borders General Hospital is a modern and well-equipped 284 bed DGH serving the rural Borders area in South East Scotland, approximately 36 miles from Edinburgh.

As from 1st April 2026 the Agenda for Change full-time working week will be reducing from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part time hours will be reduced pro-rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.
Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this post may require a different level of criminal records check done than is currently the case. If the post is assessed as a "regulated role", your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. If there is any change to what is currently required, this will be confirmed by either the Hiring Manager or the Recruitment Team.
