The role:

The position is within the Alcohol and Drug Recovery Service (ADRS) in NHS Prison Health Care at HMP Barlinnie, working closely with the Scottish Prison Service and partner agencies to improve the physical and mental well-being of people in custody. The post holder is operationally responsible and professionally accountable to the Nurse Team Leader and is expected to work autonomously with strong interpersonal and organisational skills.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • The role is peripatetic across four prisons within the Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board area:

    • HMP Barlinnie

    • HMP Greenock

    • HMP Low Moss

    • HMP Lilias

  • Although assigned a base location to HMP Barlinnie, the post holder is expected to cross-cover sites depending on service needs.

  • Full-time, Permanent

  • Shift Pattern - Monday - Friday 08:00- 16:00

Key responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with Scottish Prison Service colleagues and partner agencies.

  • Contribute to improving the physical and mental health of prisoners.

  • Maintain professional and clinical accountability in line with legal and ethical standards.

  • Operate effectively across multiple prison sites as service demands require.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • First Level Registered Nurse (RGN or RMN).

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.

  • Post‑registration experience in a clinical setting.

  • Understanding of:

    • Professional and clinical accountability

    • Legal issues and role boundaries

    • Balancing the duty of care with public safety

  • IT literacy in current systems and techniques.

  • Ability to work on own initiative with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
