Job Advert
We are advertising a 0.7wte Clinical/Counselling Psychologist post (Band 8A), working within East Renfrewshire Integrated Learning Disability Service. Applications are welcomed from current 3rd year trainee clinical psychologists.
The East Renfrewshire Learning Disability Service is an integrated health and social work team. This post is a great opportunity to develop the role of psychology in the team and also to be part of the wider Psychology Department across the Board. This post is the sole psychologist in the team. Our multidisciplinary team is highly skilled, with training in a range of low-intensity interventions including Step-Up, Beat-It as well as Positive Behaviour Support and trauma-informed practice. We have strong, collaborative relationships with local support providers ensuring the delivery of high-quality care.
The post is line managed by the Health Operational Manager with clinical supervision provided by a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the wider LD service.
This role involves providing highly specialised psychological assessment and therapy to individuals, as well as offering indirect interventions and consultation to families, service providers, and multidisciplinary colleagues. A significant aspect of the post includes designing and delivering training to both external providers and members of the LD team. The post-holder will also contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives.
The post-holder will be expected to have experience of working with a wide variety of client groups and exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment, including managing the waiting list, experience assessing and managing risk, and working within the relevant legislative frameworks for the population. Confidence in working using the Positive Behaviour Support model and carrying out neuropsychological assessment would be an advantage given the client group.
Professional development is strongly supported. The post-holder will have access to regular peer supervision with LD Psychology colleagues across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and will be encouraged to take advantage of CPD opportunities available through NHS Education for Scotland and the wider Specialist Learning Disability Service. LD Psychology staff meet monthly and participate in a quarterly Journal Club.
There are excellent links with the University of Glasgow’s doctoral training programme. The post-holder will be expected to supervise DClinPsy trainees and contribute to academic teaching. Engagement in research is actively encouraged, with time allocated in the job plan to support this.
Applicants should hold a doctoral-level qualification in Clinical or Counselling Psychology and be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. Final-year trainees eligible for registration are also welcome to apply. We are committed to supporting individual interests and will consider adapting the role to align with areas of expertise, relevant to service needs.

AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can be great for planning and preparing your application, but your answers must be your own.
- Show us the real you: Your application should reflect your skills, experience, and motivations authentically.
- Use AI wisely: It’s fine to use AI for ideas or to check spelling and grammar, but don’t let it write your answers.
- Why this matters: Applications that rely on AI-generated content may be withdrawn. By applying, you confirm your responses are based on your own knowledge and achievements.
Tip: Think of AI as a helper, not a substitute. We want to understand you, not an AI tool.
