The role:

We are seeking a Band 4 Occupational Therapy Technical Instructor. The post holder will be a member of the wider West Dunbartonshire Older Peoples Mental Health Occupational Therapy (OT) team and will contribute to the provision of occupational therapy services. You will work in partnership with Occupational Therapists to enable service users to reach their recovery potential and develop the skills necessary to manage their occupational needs. You will motivate service users and encourage community re-integration by liaising with suitable local resources to promote social inclusion. OT Technical Instructors work with both individuals and groups.

The position will involve Occupational Therapy input for the Older Peoples Community Mental Health services in Cairnmhor Resource Centre in Dumbarton, Goldenhill Resource Centre in Clydebank and Fruin/Katrin Wards at the Vale of Leven Hospital and Glenarn Ward at Dumbarton Joint Hospital.

A driving licence is desirable for this post.

An HNC in Occupational Therapy Support or similar relevant qualification is essential for the post.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Location based in Cairnmhor Resource Centre in Dumbarton, Goldenhill Resource Centre in Clydebank and Fruin/Katrin Wards at the Vale of Leven Hospital and Glenarn Ward at Dumbarton Joint Hospital.
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full-time position (36 hours per week)
  • The shift pattern for this position is Monday – Thursday 9 – 4.45pm, Friday 9 – 4.30pm

Key responsibilities:

  • Use specialised technical/creative skills to co-ordinate, develop and facilitate a flexible client centred programme of therapeutic activities for individuals/groups of clients who experience mental health difficulties and may involve supervising and working with patients on a group or one:one basis, either in ward environment, the local community or the person’s own home
  • Implement and evaluate OT interventions for clients in activities related to their treatment programme
  • Assessment and input into the provision of basic equipment and aids
  • Undertake general activities within the department e.g. ordering, delivering and demonstrating safe and effective use of basic equipment, referring to external agencies when indicated.
  • To adhere to the COT Code of Ethics and professional Conduct, COT standards for support staff and all other relevant policies and procedures
  • To undertake relevant activities both internal and external to meet training objectives as identified with supervisor
  • To maintain a record of learning and development
  • To ensure that up to date written and electronic records (i.e. EMIS) and activity data are maintained in accordance with professional and Mental Health Service standards
  • In line with Mental Health Services guidelines review and reflect on personal practice and performance through effective supervision and appraisal

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Formal creative/technical skills which can be utilised within the treatment situation
  • Experience of working in a caring environment
  • Ability to identify and access local community resources
  • Formal technical qualification, e.g. City & Guilds, Health & Social Care NVQ level 3 or HNC in Occupational Therapy Support or similar relevant qualification
  • Willingness to undertake the following within 12 months of appointment:-

- Computing skills

- Group skills

- Food handling

  • Work experience in health/social care/teaching setting
  • Ability to work single handed in supportive and community settings
  • Detailed knowledge of leisure/creative/technical activities
