The role:
West Dunbartonshire HSCP has an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Community Staff Nurse to join their team.
School Nursing works in partnership with children, young people and their carers to develop positive physical and emotional health and wellbeing – assisting them to attain their full potential. School Nursing works in partnership with the wider multi-agency team eg social work, education, police and third sector organisations – to identify and support health and wellbeing needs for a designated population of school aged children & young people based on the Principles of Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC).
Candidates require to have a working knowledge of child protection systems and are expected to provide accessible, safe, effective and person centred care as part of the School Nursing Service. Good communication, organisational and interpersonal skills along with knowledge of IT systems are essential.
The post holder will be accountable for leadership as part of the wider team and will be responsible for the day to day management of their own workload as delegated by the school nurse.
Ability to travel across West Dunbartonshire is essential.
Applications are invited from nurses registered with a First Level Degree, and evidence of recent Continuing Professional Development. Applicants should have transferrable experience and demonstrate leadership skills acquired in current and previous roles. There will be an opportunity to access the Specialist
Community Public Health Nursing - School Nursing programme. This is an exciting opportunity for nurses keen to pursue a career in School Nursing and who wish to make a difference in children and young people’s lives.

All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Location based in Dumbarton Health Centre
- Permanent Contract
- Full-time position (36 hours per week)
- Shift pattern for thus post are Monday to Friday
Key responsibilities:
The post holder is responsible and accountable for assessing, planning and implementation of programmes of care as directed by the school nurse.
Programmes of care will be developed in partnership with children, young people, families and others as appropriate. Programmes will be evidence based taking into consideration lifestyle, race, gender, cultural background and additional factors which may impact on physical, mental or emotional health.
The post holder will:
- Work in partnership with colleagues, children, young people and families, education, the local community, Health Improvement colleagues and other agencies to identify and address health needs.
- Data Protection Act
- Provide information required for the completion of reports to case conferences and the Reporter’s Office as required.
- As a mentor (underpinned by theoretical and experiential knowledge) , will ensure that systems are in place to supervise and support pre-registration nursing students and accommodate other multi-disciplinary and multi-agency personnel who require to gain an overview of the school nursing service.
- Participate in any audits relating to clinical placements in partnership with Higher Education Institutions and implement any changes as required, working in collaboration with the Board’s Practice Education Facilitators.
- Participate in the delivery of preceptorship programmes for newly qualified nursing staff as delegated by the school nurse.
- Be responsible for the utilisation of various clinical and environmental risk assessment tools in order to identify actual and potential risks and ensure implementation of appropriate interventions.
- The post holder will gather appropriate information and data on outcomes of care.

Essential
- 1st Level Nursing Registration wi8th NMC
- Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable
- Previous experience in primary care/community/paediatric setting.
- Experience in working with children, young people and families.
- Awareness of national policy and legislation within children’s services.
- Car driver.
