NHS Lanarkshire is delighted to announce that we have vacancies within Lanarkshire for Modern Apprenticeships within Healthcare Assistant (Hospital Based)


Key Details:

  • Locations: This post will be based in either or our 3 main hospitals University Hospital Wishaw, University Hospital Monklands and University Hospital Hairmyers.

  • Wage: Band 2 (£26,696 - £28,988)

  • Duration: Fixed term post for 12 months starting from the 18th of August 2026 for 36 hours each week. Part-time hours available with pro-rata salary.

  • Eligibility: Applicants should be aged 16 to 24 years old on 1st of August 2026, (or up to 29 years for applicants who have a disability or those with care experience) are eligible. Must demonstrate proficiency at SCQF Level 5/National 5 level.

What We Offer:

  • Training: Gain invaluable on-the-job training to develop a diverse range of healthcare procedures and skills.

  • Qualification: Work towards achieving a SCQF Level 6 Qualification in Healthcare Support with South Lanarkshire College, leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

  • Support: You will be well supported on this Modern Apprenticeship Programme with a dedicated workplace buddy, a Job Coach from the in-house Employability Team and regular networking sessions with other apprentices.


What We're Looking For:

  • Motivated Individuals: Highly motivated and committed individuals eager to join our Modern Apprenticeship Programme.

  • Skills: Strong communication, interested in providing a high level of patient care and a passion for helping others, along with the ability to understand various procedures and processes. Must feel comfortable providing personal care to patients as this is a hands-on role.

  • Interest: A particular interest in healthcare roles, coupled with a positive attitude towards work and professional development.


Duties as a Healthcare Assistant may include:

  • Monitoring patients and performing basic health checks.

  • Helping patients eat their meals.

  • Assisting patients with getting up and going to bed.

  • Supporting patients with washing, oral care, bathing, and dressing.

  • Assisting with visits to the toilet or changing incontinence aids.

  • Caring for patients at the end of their lives.


No Prior Experience Necessary: This Modern Apprenticeship welcomes applicants with limited work experience, including school leavers.
