Position:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Sonographer within our busy Obstetric Ultrasound department based at Ayrshire Maternity Unit, Crosshouse hospital.
Hours:
Post 1 – 36 hours per week
Post 2 – 22.5 hours per week.
Monday to Sunday 0900-1700 including weekend and Public Holiday cover.
This post is offered on a permanent basis.
From 1 April 2026, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change staff in Scotland will be reduced. Full-time hours will reduce from 37 to 36 hours (pro rata for part-time staff) without loss of earnings.
UK Driving Licence:
A UK driving licence is essential for this role.
What you will do:
We have an exciting opportunity for trainee Sonographers to join our team. We have an exciting training opportunity in Obstetric Medical Ultrasound, Annex 21 conditions apply, once qualified you will be offered a permanent contract at B7. You will join our small friendly team to perform and report a range of ultrasound examinations. In support of our core purpose of Working together to achieve the healthiest life possible for everyone in Ayrshire and Arran we are committed to a culture that is Caring, Safe and Respectful. The post holder is required to work collaboratively in a safe, caring and respectful way. The Obstetric Ultrasound service extends over several sites: University Hospital Crosshouse, Ayrshire Central Hospital, University Hospital Ayr and East Ayrshire Community Hospital and Northwest Centre, Kilmarnock, offering care closer to patient’s homes. Applications also welcome and will be considered from qualified sonographers.
This post will provide robust support to the services providing women centred elective, urgent and emergency Obstetrics Ultrasound Scan. The applicant will support linking the services across pregnancy screening, early pregnancy, and obstetrics & gynaecology to ensure we can meet national standards within the speciality.

Knowledge, training and/or experience required for this post:
The applicant must hold a profession qualification and be registered with HCPC or professional equivalent - A Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in Radiography, Midwifery and have relevant clinical experience.
The applicant must have excellent interpersonal skills.
The applicant must be able to work on their own initiative, but also able to be a flexible team player.
The applicant must have knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and good IT skills.
The applicant will be required to work (Monday to Sunday). The applicant would also be expected to take part in weekend and Public Holiday cover.
