Job Advert

Post: Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine

Location: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary

The Opportunity NHS Dumfries & Galloway is seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to join our dedicated team at the newly built Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary.

We recognise that modern consultants have diverse clinical and academic interests. Therefore, the job plan for this role is highly flexible and fully negotiable. We are fully committed to supporting:

  • Colleagues who hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in another specialty alongside Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Candidates who wish to incorporate dedicated time into their job plan for medical education, teaching, or academic research.

Working within our supportive District General Hospital environment provides unparalleled, highly visible opportunities to lead on service development, governance, and quality improvement. Our consultants frequently find that this ability to make a tangible, recognized impact translates into a strong track record for achieving Discretionary Points—a distinct professional advantage often cited by colleagues moving from larger, more crowded tertiary centres.

The Critical Care Unit & Facilities Our newly built District General Hospital opened in December 2017 and offers excellent, purpose-built facilities:

  • The Critical Care Unit is horizontally adjacent to the operating theatres and vertically adjacent to the Emergency Dept.
  • It is a 16-bed combined Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit featuring 16 individual rooms.
  • Facilities include rooms with en suite bathrooms, one isolation room, and a dedicated procedure room suitable for temporary pacemaker insertion.
  • To maximise natural light, all patient bedrooms feature electrochromic glass fronts and large windows.
  • There is an open-air terrace that some patients are able to benefit from.
  • The unit is well-equipped with Dräger Evita V800 and Nihon Kohden ventilators, Philips monitoring, ultrasound, echocardiography, and multi-modality renal support.
  • There are excellent staff facilities, including a seminar room, handover rooms, a relatives' area with overnight rooms, and adjacent on-call bedrooms.

Working Model & Research

  • The Critical Care Unit currently runs a closed model for level 3 and selected level 2 patients.
  • We are actively expanding our rota with the aim of having 8 WTE consultants which will allow us to fully close the ICU.
  • Daytime cover (Monday to Friday) is currently staffed by five Consultant Anaesthetist/Intensivists and an Acute Physician/Intensivist.
  • On-call commitment attracts a 5% pay supplement, and we are open to negotiating which specialty you provide on-call cover for based on your dual-training and expertise.
  • Our resident doctors comprise 3 ACCPs, Clinical Development Fellows (CDFs), and both anaesthetic and medical rotational trainees.
  • The Intensive Care unit participates in the Scottish Intensive Care Society Audit and has a track record of recruitment into multicentre trials.
  • You will be supported by a part-time research and education nurse who assists with local audit, research, and service development.

Candidate Requirements

To be considered for this post, prospective candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold full registration with the GMC and a current Licence to Practice.
  • Hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Intensive Care Medicine (or dual certification) or be within 6 months of achieving this at the time of interview.
