The role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Optometrist to join the Optometry and Ophthalmology Medical Retina and Corneal Teams within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
This permanent part-time role offers the opportunity to work within an established team of approximately 40 Optometrists across eight Ophthalmology departments. You will work across the Medical Retina and Corneal services, managing macula, diabetic and corneal patients, while also leading a contact lens service and delivering an optometry-led capsulotomy clinic.
This is a varied and specialist role offering the opportunity to further develop clinical expertise within extended roles in Ophthalmology.
All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- This is a permanent part-time post for 26.1 per week
- These hours will be worked 09:00 to 17:00
- You will be based at Gartnavel General Hospital G12 OYN, Clinics will be delivered across multiple sites within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Flexibility to travel between sites is essential.
- Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.
Key responsibilities:
You will be responsible for managing your own clinical caseload across Medical Retina and Corneal services, including macula, diabetic and corneal patients. The role includes leading a contact lens service, running an optometry-led capsulotomy clinic, and supporting core optometry clinics.
You will also support colleagues with their caseloads and may undertake clinical supervision responsibilities for Optometrists, Pre-Registration Optometrists and Healthcare Support Workers.
Additional responsibilities may include Turas appraisals, vetting duties, and contributing to service development and clinic rotations across Ophthalmology services. The role requires strong clinical autonomy, advanced clinical decision-making and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Degree in Optometry.
- Current registration with the General Optical Council (GOC).
- Independent Prescriber qualification (essential).
- Significant hospital contact lens experience (essential).
- Experience working within Medical Retina, Corneal or extended Ophthalmology services.
- Proven ability to manage complex clinical caseloads independently.
- Experience of supervising or supporting junior staff is desirable.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Willingness to travel across multiple NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde sites.
