Public Health Practitioner – Senior (2 posts)
36 hours per week
Base: Marischal College, Aberdeen
Permanent
We are recruiting two Public Health Practitioners – Senior to join the Aberdeen City Health & Social Care Partnership Health Improvement Team. The successful candidates will join an existing Band 6 practitioner to form a three-person Public Health Practitioner – Senior team within the wider Health Improvement Team, which also includes two Advanced Public Health Practitioners and three Health Improvement Officers. Together, the team will support the delivery of prevention plans for Active Ageing, Population Mental Health and Healthy Weight.
Each Public Health Practitioner – Senior will focus on one prevention plan while contributing capacity, expertise and shared learning across the wider portfolio. Lead areas will be agreed based on service requirements and the experience and interests of the successful candidates.
Working with communities and partners across Aberdeen, you will help translate the prevention plans into coordinated and practical action. Key responsibilities will include:
- engaging communities, people with lived experience and wider partners;
- mapping existing activity, assets and gaps;
- developing and testing practical interventions;
- strengthening prevention and early intervention;
- supporting workforce development;
- identifying opportunities for coordinated activity across the three plans;
- supporting programme planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting; and
- providing line management and development support to a Band 5 Health Improvement Officer.
You will work closely with local communities, people with lived experience, public health and health improvement colleagues, health and social care services, Aberdeen City Council, Community Planning Aberdeen, third sector organisations and other relevant partners. You will also contribute to locality planning and place-based approaches, helping to connect the prevention plans with local priorities and opportunities. Activity will be informed by evidence, local need, inequalities and community voice, while building on existing assets and intelligence to avoid duplication and strengthen coordinated partnership working.
You will have knowledge of public health and health improvement gained through a relevant degree, together with further specialist training or experience. This may include postgraduate study in Public Health or Health Improvement, or an equivalent combination of professional development and practical experience.
You will demonstrate a sound understanding of current and relevant health improvement policy and how it translates into practice. You will bring strong programme and project management, communication, facilitation, partnership-working, analytical, line-management and staff-development skills. You must be able to work independently and flexibly across a varied portfolio, manage competing priorities, support test-and-learn activity, meet deadlines and turn evidence and community insight into practical action. You must also handle sensitive issues with empathy, professionalism and appropriate confidentiality.
The ability and willingness to travel within Aberdeen City and, where required, across the Grampian area are essential for these posts. Further details are available in the attached job description.
