Special Care Dentistry, Dental Anxiety Management and Prison Dentistry

Are you a dentist passionate about improving access to dental care for patients with additional support needs? Do you enjoy working with anxious patients and those whose circumstances make accessing routine dental care challenging?

If so, we would like to hear from you.

Lothian Public Dental Service is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Dental Officer to join our multidisciplinary team in a permanent post providing high-quality, patient-centred care across Special Care Dentistry, Dental Anxiety Management and Prison Dentistry services.

The post is split across:

  • 3 days per week in Special Care Dentistry
  • 2 days per week in Dental Anxiety Management and Prison Dentistry

You will provide routine and comprehensive dental care for adults with a wide range of disabilities, impairments and complex medical, psychological or social needs who are unable to access care through the General Dental Service.

You will also provide treatment for patients with significant dental anxiety and high levels of dental disease who are referred by General Dental Practitioners and other health and social care professionals. In addition, you will contribute to the delivery of dental care within the prison healthcare setting, providing care to a population with complex oral health needs and significant health inequalities.

Treatment may be provided in a variety of settings, including community dental clinics, domiciliary settings, prisons and theatre environments. Patients may require treatment under conscious sedation or general anaesthesia, supported by the wider multidisciplinary team.

We are part of the NHS Lothian Oral Health Service, which includes consultant-led hospital services based at the Edinburgh Dental Institute, community-based specialist services and the Oral Health Improvement Team.

You will work alongside experienced colleagues within the Public Dental Service and receive support from the senior clinical team. This post offers an excellent opportunity to develop skills in Special Care Dentistry, Dental Anxiety Management and the management of vulnerable patient groups.

Applicants must:

  • Hold a BDS or equivalent qualification.
  • Be registered with the General Dental Council.
  • Hold, or be eligible to hold, an NHS List Number.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and patient management skills.
  • Have experience of treating adults with complex needs and vulnerable patient groups.
  • Be committed to multidisciplinary working and continuous professional development.

Experience in Special Care Dentistry, conscious sedation, management of anxious patients, prison dentistry or care of vulnerable adults would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain PVG Scheme Membership.
