NHS Highland’s Urology team are seeking a Consultant Urological Surgeon to join them at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. If you are a collaborative clinical leader who understands and values the perspectives of others and is motivated by testing new ways of working, we are waiting to hear from you.
This is a replacement post in a Department with an establishment of six posts.
Our Department services the needs of the population of the Highlands and Western Isles, the largest geographical health area in Scotland. The core Urology unit is based at Raigmore Hospital where all major surgery and one-stop clinics are performed. Consultants undertake regular peripheral clinics and diagnostic work which currently includes Stornoway, and with full establishment, we would plan to resume visits to Broadford on the Isle of Skye, Wick and Fort William. NHS Highland innovations such as NHS Near Me, our video consulting service, which aims to provide outpatient consultations as close as possible to home will also mean increased opportunities for consulting with patients with little or no travel, enabling more flexible working arrangements.
The Department of General Surgery and Urology currently comprises thirteen General Surgeons with a full range of sub-specialties and four Urologists. The work of the department is mostly General Urology. Sub-specialist interests which complement those of the existing Urologists are essential, and an interest in pelvic oncology, laparoscopy or diagnostics would be preferable. In response to the operating context of a NHS Highland’s remote and rural geography, you will also bring new ideas which will help turn our particular challenges into opportunities for innovation in patient care.
Raigmore Hospital is a Cancer Centre and offers a full range of secondary and tertiary services to the remote and rural areas of the Highlands and Islands and part of the West Grampian area. Back-up includes full diagnostic and interventional radiology, renal medicine, nuclear medicine, oncology and laboratory services.
There is an extensive undergraduate teaching programme with students from Aberdeen University and Scotland’s new Graduate ScotGEM programme, and a significant commitment to teaching is expected. The Highland Medical Education Centre with the University of the Highlands and Islands and ScotGEM has a state of the art Clinical Skills Centre and a Research Unit which offer exciting academic opportunities.
The Centre for Rural Health of the University of Aberdeen provides support, guidance and co-ordination to clinical research into healthcare delivery in remote and rural areas of Scotland. Scotland’s newest university, the University of the Highlands and Islands has just established a multimillion pound campus in the City of Inverness, linked by foot bridge to our Raigmore Hospital site.
The Centre for Health Sciences facility houses a library, lecture theatres, research lab and clinical skills centre.
Informal enquiries about this role are welcome. Mr Alan Grant, Service Lead for Surgery on 01463 705691 and Mr Ian Wilson Consultant Urologist on 01463 706190 would welcome your call, as would any of the substantive Urologists from our team.
Please only use the NHS Highland Application form which is available via the JobTrain portal.
