Neonatal and Children’s Services across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Applications are invited for a whole time, or maximum part-time consultant post in Neonatology in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The post will be based in the Princess Royal Maternity, a large tertiary neonatal unit with 5,800 deliveries, and will join the existing body of 7 consultants in post on this site. All neonatal units in Greater Glasgow and Clyde are now part of a single management structure with additional neonatal cots based at The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in the south of Glasgow and the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

An opportunity exists for appointment to a Consultant post in Neonatology as part of a busy and well supported neonatal service, with links to a wider network, which provides regional and supra-regional services for the West of Scotland and nationally.

GGC Neonatal Services consists of 3 neonatal units and associates services. The neonatal unit at the Royal Hospital for Children is on the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus with alongside the maternity services including fetal medicine department and labour ward. Neonatal surgical services and supra-regional services are provided on this site. The Princess Royal Maternity Neonatal Unit (where this post will be based) is a level 3 unit based in the east of the city on the site of Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley is a level 2 unit.  In line with recommendations from the Best Start Neonatal services review there is the potential for restructuring of neonatal units across the country and re-designation of neonatal units.

All the neonatal units in Greater Glasgow & Clyde are part of a single management structure. Much work has been done to integrate the services across the health board with the development of common guidelines and working practices.  It is anticipated that the Neonatal Consultant Group in Glasgow will operate closely as a single team across the city to ensure continuity of care for babies transferred between units, whilst retaining strong links to an individual site ensuring the maintenance of robust clinical team working. All clinical duties will be based at the PRM.

The Glasgow Neonatal services are part of the National Neonatal Network which, along with the National Maternity network, are governed together as the Scottish Perinatal Network. Together, the networks encourage collaborative working between maternity and neonatal services and support the best possible outcomes for mothers, babies and families.
