To work within the nursing and multi-professional team to ensure a high standard of care to Acute Medical Receiving patients.  Competently perform the necessary technical/invasive/physical aspects of care for this defined patient group.  You will use your own initiative and acts independently within the bounds of your existing knowledge and skills. You will demonstrates sound judgment in assessing the emotional and physical care of the patient in a patient centred way.  The candidate should have experience working as a registered nurse.  This is an exciting opportunity to merge working in an Acute Medical Receiving unit and caring for patients with stroke in their acute phase.  Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Scotland and most common cause of severe adult physical disability.  A number of modifiable risk factors for stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) are recognized.  Public health and primary prevention strategies have successfully reduced incident stroke.  However, this occurs in the context of sociodemographic change and potential increases in prevalent and recurrent stroke with associated complex comorbidity.  Providing safe, effective and timely stroke care remains challenging and rewarding.  There is robust evidence to support the utility of key aspects of early stroke management in reducing mortality and disability.  Evidence based interventions include early administration of aspirin for (imaging confirmed) ischaemic stroke; use of intravenous thrombolysis in selected cases and admission to a dedicated hyper acute stroke unit (HASU).  The importance of these interventions is recognised by the Scottish Government and services are audited against national standards for brain scanning; administration of aspirin; swallow assessment; thrombolysis and admission to ASU.  As part of the Acute Services Review Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) opened a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) with 5 beds within Ward 53 (Acute Medical Receiving Unit) in 2015.  The HASU has been successful in improving GRI performance against national targets.  The development of hyperacute services at the GRI sites continues with introduction of a thrombolysis service in 2016.  Looking forward we are working with the multi-disciplinary team to implement thombectomy service across GGC. Therefore, this would be a good time for register nurses to join this dynamic team.
