CONSULTANT VASCULAR SURGEON
10 PA’s PLUS 2 EPA’s
FIXED TERM CONTRACT UNTIL THE 31ST SEPTEMBER 2023
Applications are invited for the locum post of a Consultant Vascular Surgeon. This is a replacement post. The successful applicant will work with two colleagues to provide a wide range of emergency and elective vascular surgery. The post is offered on the new Consultant Contract terms and conditions, on a 10 programmed activity basis although two EPAs may be available.
Raigmore Hospital is the principal acute hospital serving the population of NHS Highland. The catchment population for vascular surgery is approximately 250, 00. This includes patients from NHS Western Isles. Raigmore Hospital is a modern, well-equipped, general hospital. Its relative geographical isolation demands levels of services greater than that seen in many hospitals of comparable size. It has an approximately 454 beds, employs more than 2,500 staff and has an annual budget of approximately £130m.
Following the National review of Vascular Services, the North of Scotland Planning Group has agreed upon a collaborative clinical network that will continue to offer tier 3 vascular services to patients in NHS Highland.
The successful applicant will join two Consultant Vascular Surgeons supported by a Vascular Nurse Specialist, a Speciality Doctor, Specialist Training Doctors in General Surgery and Foundation Doctors. The post holder will participate in a dedicated vascular 1:3 on call rota. The vascular team works as an integrated unit within the department of general surgery. The appointee is not expected to have clinical general surgical responsibilities.
The department offers a full range of vascular surgical services including screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm, open and endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, lower limb reconstruction, carotid endarterectomy and vascular trauma. Raigmore hospital has a significant sized renal dialysis unit. The vascular team provides access surgery for these patients. There is an interventional radiology service provided in our modern endovascular theatre by visiting Interventional Radiologists from NHS Tayside. The vascular unit at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee accepts patients out of hours requiring emergency endovascular or hybrid procedures. The department has an established amputee rehabilitation team with limb fitting on site. The vascular surgeons attend a multidisciplinary diabetic foot clinic. The endovenous service offering radiofrequency ablation and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy of varicose veins has been suspended since the start of the pandemic but is expected to recommence in the foreseeable future. The new appointee is encouraged to participate in all of these services.
