Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once CESR is awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.  

Applications are welcome for the above Permanent/ full time (40 hours per week) post based in Astley Ainslie Hospital. Applications for less than full time will be considered.

You will be employed by NHS Lothian and will work closely with the 2 existing consultants in Lothian, and multidisciplinary teams in the Board to deliver consistent clinical leadership and advice.  You will be based in Edinburgh with a requirement to travel to all NHS Lothian sites and on occasion to client sites within SE Scotland.  The total workforce served is in the region of 26 000 NHS staff.  You will be responsible for the delivery of occupational medical advice to the Board and its staff.  Subject to discussion and agreement, there may be opportunities for you to deliver services to the external clients of the Board across a range of industry sectors.

You will contribute to the clinical governance and quality systems aimed at improving the effectiveness of care.  You will be offered opportunities to contribute to the teaching of medical undergraduates, to specialty and general practice trainees, and to those working in nursing and AHP disciplines.

You will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team within the department – OH nurses, OH physiotherapists, staff counsellors, manual handling training, and health and safety professionals to promote service delivery in line with the Board and NHS Scotland strategy.

Your appointment will be on under the terms of the 2004 consultant contract. NHS Lothian initially allocates all consultants 10 PAs made up of 9 PAs in direct clinical care (DCC) and one core SPA for CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning, internal routine communication, and management meetings. Additional SPAs may be available to you within the job plan to support your other professional activities in line with the needs of the service.
