Healthcare Support Worker (Mental Health Services)

Pre-Employment Training Programme

Commencing Monday 7th November 2022

NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde is looking to recruit trainees to join our Healthcare Support Worker (Mental Health) Sector Based Work Academy programme. We are looking for people with a genuine interest in training to work as a Healthcare Support Worker within Mental Health Services to join our Training Programme starting 7th November 2022.

This 5 week training programme is open to people living within our catchment area who are not currently in employment or in education and interested in working as a Healthcare Support worker within Mental Health Services.

There is no requirement for previous experience or specific qualifications. We are looking for “people people” with good communication skills, a caring outlook and a genuine interest in working within Mental Health Services.

Before applying it is essential that you attend an online information session to learn more about working within Mental Health services and receive instructions on how to apply.

Training Programme Outline

The programme is made up of two weeks of classroom based training delivered by NHS GGC specialists followed by a three week work placement. The classroom based training provides key knowledge and skills to prepare trainees for the placement and the placement offers a chance for hands-on experience in the role.

By the end of the programme trainees will have had the benefit of training in key areas and have a chance to test out if the role of healthcare support worker within Mental Health is for them.

Classroom Training takes place at West Glasgow ACH in Partick and placements are hosted in one of the following locations:

  • Stobhill Hospital (Glasgow North)
  • Leverndale Hospital (Glasgow South)
  • Gartnavel Royal Hospital (Glasgow West)
  • Dykebar Hospital (Paisley)
  • Inverclyde Royal Hospital (Greenock)​​​​​​​

Please note that placements will hosted in Adult In Patient services only:

Successful completion of this programme guarantees that you will be interviewed for suitable Healthcare Support Worker vacancies across our NHS GGC and the opportunity to be enrolled on Nursing and Midwifery Bank as a HCSW.

If you are a DWP Benefits Claimant speak to your Work coach or DWP Adviser. This programme meets the criteria for a Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) which means you will continue to receive your benefits while you are on the programme.
