About the role

We are currently recruiting two Mental Health Services Senior Charge Nurses to join our senior inpatient nursing leadership team who have responsibility for older adult population within Balmore Ward a Dementia Assessment Ward and Banff Ward is for Older Adults with functional mental health problems.  The Wards are within the Leverndale Hospital site in south Glasgow.  

Balmore Ward is an 18 bedded Ward in Leverndale Hospital providing care for male and female patients who have a diagnosis of Dementia and who are perceived to have significant levels of distress associated with dementia. The psychological responses to stress and distress in dementia are assessed by the team and using a biopsychosocial model of care.


Banff ward is a 20 bed unit within the Leverndale site providing care for male and female  older adults experiencing functional mental health problems.   Psychological and biological responses to these illnesses are assessed and monitored by the MDT and close links with CMHTs to ensure recovery focussed evidenced based coordinated care in the right place at the right time.


As well as nursing colleagues both wards have 5 Consultant Psychiatrists covering various geographic catchment areas, dedicated Psychologist, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapists, Therapeutic Activity nurse who function as Multidisciplinary teams to ensure efficient evidenced based care provision.


The successful post holders will have professional and managerial responsibility for the ward nursing and support team, including responsibility for facilitating and providing clinical leadership whilst ensuring a high standard of person centred care is delivered to patients and their families. 

These are key leadership roles in the delivery of safe, person centered, effective, timely and equitable care requiring the post holders to manage registered nursing staff and support staff  as well as  coordinating  input from  the wider multidisciplinary team.

The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work in an Inpatient mental health services function that uses  a multi-disciplinary approach and aims to deliver quality care underpinned by values and evidenced based practice in an environment  that places minimal possible restrictions on personal choice.

As the a senior charge nurse you will be instrumental in the day to day running of the Ward leading your team to manage service improvement with a strong focus on training and education in your areas of expertise.

Reporting to the Inpatient Service Manager you will also work closely with wider senior management within the hospital site and Older People and Primary care Community services on delivery of clinical governance and service development processes including the meeting of key inpatient objectives. You will participate in multi-disciplinary decision making with regards to clinical and risk assessment/ risk management and plans of care. Monitoring nursing clinical activity/ workforce issues and ensuring resource efficiency are critical aspects of the roles.

This role demands evidence of effective communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. We are looking for an individual with enthusiasm and commitment who will enjoy the challenge the role offers.


It is an essential requirement that you are a NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse and will bring to the role extensive post registration experience within a relevant area and/or demonstrate expert clinical and professional practice developed through experience. You will be experienced in leading teams and can work effectively as part of a multi-professional / multi-agency team. The SCN post holder will be required to work across all shift patterns, working 5 days over 7 days but hours can be negotiated.
