An exciting opportunity has arisen within the National Treatment Centre (NTC) for Perioperative Technicians– Scrub. The NTC is scheduled to open in November 2022, with the successful applicant being based in the Raigmore operating theatre department prior to the NTC opening. This role will focus primarily on orthopaedic surgery and will involve scrubbing for elective hip/knee replacements and also hand and foot surgery.

The successful candidate will complete an SVQ at SCQF level 7/8 which will be delivered in- house. This will involve workplace assessments in the clinical areas and the successful completion of 10 SVQ units.

As well as the ‘circulating role’ successful applicants will be expected to perform the ‘scrub’ role which includes: scrubbing, gloving, gowning, setting up of equipment and instrument trays, draping of patients, the handling and handing over of instruments to the surgeons, anticipating the surgeons’ requirements during the surgical procedure, counts, documentation and hand-over to recovery staff.

We are therefore looking for dynamic and motivated individuals with good communication skills preferably with operating department experience at a Band 2 or Band 3. However consideration will be given to candidates who have transferable skills from other areas. Ideally you will have been educated to SVQ level 3 or have completed SVQ units at a level 3 (SCQF level 7) but consideration will be given to experienced individuals.

In order to apply, candidates must complete the relevant job application but also write 400 words on “What is your understanding around the delegation of duties from a registered practitioner in relation to this role” (Perioperative Care Collaborative, 2015. Position Statement, Optimising the contribution of the perioperative support worker).

Copies of the above statement will be available from Employment Services upon application pack request

This post will either be a Band 3 training post until successful completion of the SVQ award with the offer of a Band 4 Permanent post on successful completion of the training.  Alternatively the successful candidate may already be working as a Band 4 in theatre scrub.
