Post: Band 6 (AfC appendix 21) Trainee SCPHN – full-time (band 5 until start of course)

The Scottish Government has committed to training an additional 250 Specialist School Nurses across Scotland to support the Re-focused role of the School Nurse.  https://www.gov.scot/publications/school-nursing-role-integrated-community-nursing-teams-school-nursing-priority/  NHS Borders School Nursing Team has an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to undertake the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse course at Queen Margaret University in January 2023.  

This successful candidate will, ideally, have up to date experience of working in a School Nursing role although consideration will be given to candidates with a keen interest in school nursing as there will be some time spent with the School Nursing Team before undertaking the course.

As a SCPHN School Nurse Trainee within the School Nursing Team, the successful candidate will have a practice placement within the East area of NHS Borders, Kelso, Duns and Eyemouth and the support of a Practice Teacher, Team leader and wider School Nursing Team.

During the training period and as you develop into your new role you will work closely with the multi-professional team including, AHPS, Paediatric Department, Education, Social Work, CAMHS and third sector partners. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team and autonomously will be imperative to being successful in the role.    There are clear lines of reporting into the management structure and support from experienced SCPHN’s and School Nurses to aid your development. You must have excellent time management skills, the ability to prioritise referrals, as well as the ability to take and act on advice and guidance from senior/more experienced Staff
