About NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is the largest health organisation in the NHS in Scotland providing acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of 1.2 million in 6 local authority areas.  Secondary and tertiary care services are delivered currently from three Acute services sectors covering North Glasgow, South Glasgow and the Clyde sector along with three Directorates covering Women and Children’s Services, Regional Services and Diagnostics and Imaging.

With responsibility for 3 Acute sites, the Clyde sector is distinct from the other NHSGGC sectors. A full range of District General Hospital Specialties with excellent support facilities are delivered from Inverclyde Royal Infirmary (Greenock), Vale of Leven Hospital (Dunbartonshire) and the largest Clyde sector acute hospital - Royal Alexandra Hospital (Paisley)

Located in the West of Scotland, near Glasgow, the Clyde sector has an annual budget of around £198m with 3,240 whole time equivalent (wte) staff and is recognised as a substantial part of NHS GGC’s Acute services. The sector has 1,416 inpatient beds and approximately 64, 200 inpatient cases, 34, 000 day cases and 120, 000 ED attendances annually.

Serving a large urban and rural catchment area across Renfrewshire and Inverclyde, including parts of Argyll and Bute, our hospitals are recognized as being at the heart of the community and we’re investing in the future by creating sustainable clinical services. Work is already underway to develop and implement the models of care flowing from our Moving Forward Together Strategy and steering the Clyde sector through the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic whilst ensuring services continue to respond to the increased demands of a changing population and deliver against key national performance targets including Access and Waiting Times.

The Opportunities

Working in NHSGGC’s Older People and Stroke Services can be a very rewarding experience in terms of developing professional practice and sub-specialty interests. The demand for Older People and Stroke services across Greater Glasgow and Clyde is increasing year-on-year.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of consultants providing a needs-led comprehensive Geriatric Medicine service and Stroke service based within the Clyde Sector

The appointed candidate will join a well-established and friendly Clyde sector team of 12 consultants supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team including junior medical grade staff, Advance Nurse Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals and support staff, all committed to improving the patient pathway to promote and deliver high standards of patient care, outcomes, experience, safety and quality for elderly and frail people.

GORU service

The primary aim of the Orthogeriatric service is to provide a rapid and comprehensive geriatric assessment to all patients admitted with hip fractures within 72 hours of admission, while extending this same criteria to all patients that have been admitted to the Orthopaedic wards with a fall (with or without a bony injury).

The successful candidate will work as part of the award winning Geriatric Orthopaedic Rehabilitation team.  The RAH team has won the Golden Hip award in recent years: this award has been made for the hospital with the highest achievement in complying with the 11 Standards of Hip Fracture Care in the Older Person.  The Orthogeriatric service covers all patients aged over 65 that are admitted to Orthopaedics from within the catchment of RAH, Vale of Leven District Hospital and Lorn & Islands District General.

The current Orthogeriatric service model includes a Fast-track pathway to transfer care from acute Orthopaedics to GORU.  At present, ECONs undertake an initial comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and the Orthogeriatric service provide a medical liaison service of medically unwell elderly orthopaedic patients.

As a subspecialty, the GORU team are highly supportive of professional development and quality improvement projects and recently had multiple poster presentations at National and International conferences.

Successful candidates will be given a high degree of autonomy and time to undertake supporting professional activities including training and teaching or to pursue sub speciality interests.

The job is offered as a full-time post on a 10 PA basis but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. Up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional outpatient and/or procedure sessions or management activity.

Additional Non DCC (up to 2 PA’s in total – Inclusive of 1 core SPA plus 1 additional non DCC can be negotiated and agreed between the successful candidate and Management depending on the time required to support professional activities and the needs of the service.

All newly qualified Consultants are initially offered a minimum of 1 Core Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) which includes CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning and management meetings. This will be reviewed within

6 months (or earlier if required) of appointment and revised upwards if additional responsibilities are agreed.
