This post would be ideally suited to a trainee who is keen to enhance their CV prior to applying for an NTN in medical or clinical oncology or as a post CCT fellowship post prior to a consultant appointment with a focus on clinical trials. Full induction will be provided and this can be adapted depending on the seniority of the successful applicant. This GI/ Brain Cancer Research Fellowship has been developed to provide training in clinical trials and support research activities at Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.
The post will involve assessment and management of outpatients attending specialist GI/ Brain cancer and clinical research unit clinics at WOSCC. It may also involve input into care of ward patients and presentation of patients at regional MDTs. The candidate will be expected to become fully familiar with the management of GI/ Brain cancer. Furthermore we would expect the post holder to contribute to the incorporation of new data from published clinical trials into the existing clinical management guidelines. There is an opportunity to work with lab based groups one day per week which should also lead to high impact publications.
Critically the candidate will be required to become familiar with all proposed and current clinical trials available for patients with GI/ Brain cancers. They will have the opportunity to participate in CTEC presentations and local regulatory processes. They will identify potential patients seen at clinic or MDT for clinical trials at WOSCC. They will be named as a sub-investigator for clinical trials which will involve consenting, recruiting and assessing clinical trial patients. The post holder will be expected to undertake a minimum of one substantial research project with a view to achieving at least one publication.
RESEARCH
Clinical research is the central focus of this post. As detailed above, the post will involve having an integral role in delivering clinical trials to our GI/ Brain cancer patients. We will also expect the post holder to undertake a research project the focus of which can be developed jointly with the GI and Brain cancer trials teams.
