The post holder will be required to:-

•    Be responsible for provision of Cytology services within Pathology for Greater Glasgow & Clyde. This incorporates HPV and LBC Cervical Screening and Diagnostic Cytology (including Andrology) service provision. The post holder manages this service subdivision for the whole of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.
•    Perform as lead specialist in their subdivision, working autonomously to ensure delivery of the overall Pathology service. 
•    Accountable to the Pathology Operations Manager for the provision of Cytology services.
•    Ensure that a large variety of specialised laboratory procedures are performed in a timely and efficient manner, using a complex range of methodology.
•    Have the responsibility for ensuring correct handling and processing of a range of complex pathological specimens, demanding a high knowledge level and highly skilled performance.  
•    Contribute to the interpretation and application of guidelines, and assist in formulating policy.
•    Maintain and monitor the quality of the service and provide interpretative advice to medical staff and other laboratories or professional groups.
•    Be responsible for the development of new methodologies within Cytology.
•    Provide direction and advice regarding Cytology to the Pathology Operations Manager as to the future technical and financial running of the Cytology service within GG&C.
•    Monitor the consumable, equipment and reagent expenditure for the Cytology service.
•    Be responsible for advanced maintenance, and quality control of all equipment and reagents etc within their subdivision.
•    Undertake line manager duties for staff allocated to their subdivision, including: workload allocation and re-allocation, monitoring staff performance & identifying training needs, conducting performance appraisals and preparing personal development plans, and dealing with disciplinary matters.
•    Manage the education and training of staff allocated to their subdivision.
•    Comply with the code of conduct required of a Healthcare Scientist registered with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).


The post holder requires the following:-

•    Appropriate State Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist is mandatory
•    MSc Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent level of knowledge.
•    Extensive post State Registration experience, including experience as a senior health care scientist.
•    Management experience and knowledge appropriate to the post is required. This may be represented by a formal management qualification.
•    Specialised scientific/technical knowledge is required by the post holder to perform their duties effectively and to advise others.
•    Evidence of continuing professional development for example a portfolio of highly developed specialist knowledge, including management and service development. 
•    Demonstrate high level of competence in problem solving and prioritising workloads.
•    Trained in software packages to manipulate information and present data
•    Provide quality leadership with good planning and organisational skills.
The shift pattern is; Monday – Friday (09:00-1700)
