This post is part of a small Paediatric Psychology team providing a psychological service to young people with physical health presentations. The post holder will liaise closely with colleagues in Paediatric care. The post holder will provide assessment and offer clinical interventions to young people presenting with mental health and emotional wellbeing concerns
The post holder will provide a high quality paediatric service to children, young people and families attending the Paediatric Psychology Service (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service, CAMHS), working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the department’s policies and procedures. This includes:
Mental health assessments and interventions (including specific neuropsychological assessments).
Provision of expert paediatric psychological advice and consultation on clients’ psychological are to health colleagues and to non professional carers.
Teaching principles of psychological theory and therapy (paediatric and generic mental health) to non mental health trained colleagues and to other non professional carers.
To apply research skills to guide and develop evidence based clinic practice and in service development, service evaluation and clinical audit, and undertaking clinically relevant research.
To offer advice to other CAMHS staff in respect of paediatric CAMHS issues when required.
Additional Information Specific to the Role
The team provides a dedicated service to 3 teams: neurology, respiratory and diabetes. It also offers a general service to other paediatric conditions such as gastroenterology and rheumatology. The service covers both North and South Lanarkshire and the majority of clinical work is provided in outpatient locations (usually health centres), although some inpatient work will be required within the 2 children’s wards within Wishaw General Hospital.
The main area of work is direct clinical work with children and families, conducting in-depth neuropsychological assessments, consultations with each of the three specific medical teams and teaching and training of healthcare staff (both acute and community) across Lanarkshire to improve understanding of psychological issues of children with chronic illness. An ability to work creatively with families, pulling on a number of key therapeutic orientations is essential. Remaining up-to-date with regards to working within the growing field of paediatric psychology and being aware of medical advances is essential. The team is also keen to encourage research projects, therefore an interest in being involved in new developments would be advantageous.
