CAU is an area of current service development and design incorporating exciting process changes, fast paced changes and many wide and varied opportunities for Staff Nurses of various levels of experience. The Staff Nurse role within CAU are wide and variable and the role can change throughout a shift with support from senior staff.

In collaboration with the Senior Charge Nurse, you will be accountable for the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for the defined patient groups in CAU, working within the professional standards held by the NMC Code.

There are four areas within CAU that require very different approaches to patient management- Medical Assessment 1 & 2, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Acute In-patient zones. On each shift you could be allocated to any of these areas.

You will be responsible and accountable for the safe application of patient centred care. You with the other members of the multi-disciplinary team are responsible for the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for each individual patient, working within the professional standards held in the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

You will support the other members of the team to meet the needs of their patients and all allied, multidisciplinary team members involved in the care of the patient.

You must identify acutely unwell adults, specialty needs, referral needs, family and social support needs amongst many others.
You will acknowledge the need to efficiently manage flow within the area they are working, to specialty wards and support timeous discharge, interacting with families and social services to discharge safely and effectively.
You will actively support the SCN to ensure the unit meets the expectations of support systems such as HEI and OPAH and incorporate this into your daily workload to ensure patient safety within the unit.
You will actively seek opportunities for growth and development to increase their knowledge base and actively seek out experiential and reflective learning and be up to date with Learn-pro and MAST.
You will administer prescribed medications following the NMC Code and Standards for administration of medicine.

On occasion, as competency and confidence develops you will also be expected to act as coordinator for the inpatient areas and SDEC. This requires additional leadership skills – delegating, prioritising, increased focus on flow, nurturing and supporting junior staff. When coordinating you will be responsible for supporting the decision making surrounding the management of each patient. You will be heavily involved in the ward round, discussing appropriate treatment plans and offering the nursing opinion of the individual patients’ needs.
