NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

NHS Lothian covers Edinburgh city, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. We are the second largest health system in NHS Scotland and one of only four teaching Boards. We have strategic partnerships with local Universities, Local Authorities and our four Integration Joint Boards. We serve a population of 900,000, providing a range of primary, community based and acute hospital services. We also provide regional and national services across a range of clinical specialties.

The vision for the Pharmacy & Medicines service is to deliver clinically led, person-centred services to ensure patients across Lothian get the best from their medicines and pharmacy services. We are focussed on creating an environment where each person in the team has the opportunity to flourish, develop and make best use of their skills.

An opportunity has arisen within Adult Rheumatology in NHS Lothian; a truly supportive and welcoming team that clearly values the input of pharmacy.

This is a well-established post in the exciting outpatient specialty of Rheumatology. There is a key focus on the use of biologic and advanced therapies for inflammatory rheumatic diseases, with a small commitment to the osteoporosis and bone service. The lead rheumatology pharmacist for Lothian is based out of the Western General Hospital but provides support and advice for all Rheumatology patients within NHS Lothian.

Main duties of the job include: leadership and clinical input for the Rheumatology biologics service including chairing the weekly biologic multi-disciplinary meeting, patient education, undertaking clinics (after appropriate training), managing Homecare services for adult rheumatology with support from the NHS Lothian Homecare team and line management of the specialist rheumatology pharmacist along with two administrative posts. A large part of the role involves medicines management and clinical governance for the specialty; including writing and updating protocols and guidelines, drug counselling checklists, completing formulary submissions and monitoring of the high-cost drug budget.

Candidates must have a Master of Pharmacy Degree or equivalent, must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and should have completed a Clinical Diploma or Masters in Clinical Pharmacy.  An independent prescribing qualification is desirable.

Fixed term 12 months.
