Patients are at the centre of everything we do in our daily working lives at NHS Borders ensuring they are safe, cared for efficiently, effectively by suitably experienced and qualified staff driving quality at the heart of patient care. We are a dynamic and forward thinking team with a wealth of clinical and leadership experience.  We aim for an open and honest culture and believe in nurturing future stars in the NHS in Scotland.

Borders General Hospital in Melrose is a modern and well-equipped 284 bed DGH serving the rural Borders area in South East Scotland, approximately 36 miles from Edinburgh.  After an absence of almost 50 years, the Borders Railway has now opened, with train services to central Edinburgh running every thirty minutes (journey time 50 minutes approx).  Tweedbank Station is a few minutes walk from the Borders General Hospital.  On opening the railway Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth said "The Borders railway brings so much promise for sharing and invigorating this most beautiful countryside as a place to work, live and enjoy”.

By the way MELROSE has taken the title of the best place to live in Scotland in a national ranking - https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/melrose-in-the-borders-is-best-place-to-live-in-scotland-says-sunday-times-survey-8hrlq8lqb

A relocation package/assistance with temporary accommodation up to full Inland Revenue limits in the local area is available for the successful candidate.

We support new consultants with the development of leadership and management skills. There are also opportunities for professional coaching and mentoring – an established BGH consultant will be identified as a “buddy” in your first few weeks.

The Role

We are looking for physicians to bring their skills to our medical department, with a vision to develop and support the clinical services in all aspects of their specialty bringing an ongoing commitment to the medical unit as a whole. We are very keen for those with an accredited sub-specialty interest in Gastroenterology, Respiratory Medicine or Diabetes & Endocrinology. However, other specialties including Medicine for the Elderly and Acute Medicine will also be considered on their merits as to how they would contribute to the team overall. Appropriate protected time will be allocated to undertake specialist sessions.

Participation with colleagues in the acute medical on-call rota at the Borders General Hospital at a frequency of approximately 1:16.

Candidates must hold MRCP or equivalent and must also be registered with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice on the Specialist Register for General Internal Medicine (GIM) or Acute Medicine before taking up the post or be as training grade doctor within 6 months of expected date of obtaining CCT (or equivalent).

Informal enquiries are welcome and arrangements to visit the Hospital should be made to Dr Jonathan Manning, Clinical Director for General Medicine; telephone 01896 826484, jonathan.manning@borders.scot.nhs.uk

If you are a Geriatrician with dual GIM specialist registration or a final year training grade doctor in Medicine for the Elderly who will be accredited with a dual CCT with General Internal Medicine, the Clinical Director in Medicine for the Elderly would be pleased to speak to you.  Please contact Dr Rachel Stewart, telephone 01896 826266,  rachel.stewart@borders.scot.nhs.uk
