In addition there are three Directorates with cross site responsibilities covering Regional Services, Diagnostics and Woman and Children’s Services.

Our team of 6 Acute Directors play a vital leadership and operational management role for largest and most complex Acute Health and Care system in Scotland.

We are now looking to strengthen that team with the appointment of 2 Directors to the following keys posts which have arisen due to an internal promotion appointment:

Post 1

Director, Regional Services: Leading, directing and managing a wide ranging portfolio of highly specialised services (Neurosciences, National Spinal Injuries, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Interventional Neuroradiology, Renal, Burns and Plastics, Forensic Mental Health Services and the Dental Hospital) on a NHS Board, West of Scotland and National basis. Accountable for a budget of £373m and around 3,547 wte staff, the role has also a clear focus on achieving NHS Scotland Cancer targets.

Post 2

Director, Diagnostics:  Accountable for a budget of £230m and around 2,833 wte staff, the post holder will have responsibility for ensuring the achievement of maximum clinical efficiency of all laboratory and diagnostic imaging services across the whole of the Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

This includes: all laboratory medicine including paediatrics, diagnostic imaging (including The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and also The Lanarkshire Beatson radiological services), Vascular Radiology, City-wide Mortuary Services, Clinical Physics and The Medical Illustration Service.

In addition community based services for breast screening and the cervical cancer screening programme, are managed within the Directorate. The Directorate has the largest radiotherapy physics and nuclear medicine departments and health physics and equipment management in both Scotland and the UK.

About the Roles

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, each post holder will have responsibility for leading, developing and directing resources within a large Acute Directorate.

Both roles have a substantial delivery component against local and national performance objectives and targets such as waiting time standards. A continuing priority of both posts is the need to deliver large scale transformation with and through already established Senior Management and Clinical teams and broader workforces across each of the Directorates.

These roles present a unique career opportunity to influence, shape and drive delivery of Acute services in a different way across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and to work in partnership across all parts of the Acute system to drive forward collaborative programmes of work.

As a member of the Acute Senior Management team, you will have the opportunity to fully contribute to and participate in the corporate management and governance of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, working closely with the other Acute Directors, Corporate Directors of the Board. Partnership working is critical to both  roles to ensure increasing integration with our local Health and Social Care Partnerships and local authority partners as is working across the NHS system locally, regionally and nationally to maximise outcomes for patients through collaborative approaches and patient centred pathway re-design.

Both posts are viewed as vital leadership roles requiring both inspirational and transformational leaders with the versatility of style and the confidence to operate at the most senior levels of a complex and changeable NHS environment.

Our Directors will also have an important role to play in helping shape our vision for the future. Each Director will be expected to grasp, at pace, the short and medium–term priorities  of the resulting changes in acute care resulting from the Board’s Moving Forward Together Transformational Plan and the impact on service and resource planning.

A key focus will be to ensure services continue to respond to the increased demands of a changing population and deliver against key national performance targets including Access and Waiting Times.

We are seeking to appoint two exceptional candidates.

We are seeking individuals  who can demonstrate, the ability to develop an understanding of the strategic direction of a large and operationally complex multisite NHS Acute healthcare environment operating at pace and scale.

Educated to degree level or equivalent the candidates appointed will bring a significant track record operating at senior manager or close to Board level preferably within a complex health and social care system or other comparable Public /Private sector organisation. The ability to evidence balance between strategic direction and the operational delivery of high quality, safe and effective person-centred care is essential.
