Internal Medicine Training Stage 1 - IMT1+
South-East of Scotland region
Reference: TG 1721
NHS Lothian is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.
To this end, NHS Lothian welcomes applications from all sections of society.
Applications are welcome for the above Fixed Term, Full time (40 hours per week) post (Location – TBC).
Programme / Post Description:
The South East Scotland Internal Medicine Training (IMT) programme is based upon the previous regional CMT programme, which was ranked top in the UK for overall trainee satisfaction (GMC National Training Survey 2016 - 18) as well as having the highest MRCP pass rates by completion of CT2. The new IMT Stage 1 curriculum (introduced in 2019) has been successfully implemented and is now firmly embedded across the region.
These fixed term posts will provide a broad foundation of experience within both central and peripheral hospitals across the region, mapped to the IMT Stage 1 curriculum. There are 6 LAT posts available, each for a fixed term duration of 12 months. It is likely that posts will be appointed to IMT-1 level, however appointment to IMT 2 or IMT3 will be considered depending on demonstration of relevant prior skills and experience. These posts will provide excellent experience and training particularly for those considering a career within a physician-based speciality or working towards completion of MRCP.
Posts will involve 4-month rotations across various medical specialities including Acute Medicine, Medicine for the Elderly, Cardiology and Respiratory, and can be tailored to suit the successful applicant, including critical care if required for IMT Stage 1. Posts will be based across the 3 health boards in South East Scotland with rotations including Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Western General Hospital, Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy, St. John’s Hospital and Borders General Hospital.
All posts will have Deanery approval for training towards IMT Stage 1. Successful completion of these posts could later be counted towards IMT Stage 1 training or by pursuing the Alternative Certificate route.
Current IMT trainees achieve the requirements such as clinic attendance, QIP, WPBAs for successful outcome at ARCP with little difficulty, and there is a high success rate for entry into Higher Specialty Training on completion of the programme. Formal teaching is delivered by regional and national IMT Training Days (currently delivered online) and the centrally organised IMT Bootcamp. Trainees are also encouraged to attend relevant RCPE Symposia, Evening Medical Updates and local clinical teaching and in their second year CPD focused on their proposed career choice.
Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities:
Although there are currently no formal academic IMT posts in SES, all trainees will be required to complete a QIP annually and during time in these posts there may be opportunity to participate in research projects of your choice. Edinburgh has a high rating for medical research with many exciting opportunities. Training in teaching methods is also encouraged through the South East Faculty of Clinical Educators which can lead to formal qualification.
This post has deanery approval for training and the successful applicant will receive training opportunities at the appropriate level based on previous experience.
There may be a possibility to extend this appointment to the end of the training year. The extension may be at any of the hospitals on the rotation.
