Consultant in Public Health / Consultant in Public Health Medicine

Waverley Gate Edinburgh

Reference: CG2454

We are a looking for a forward thinking Consultant to join our Population Health Department within the Directorate of Public Health and Health Policy.  This is a permanent full time position (full time posts are currently 10 programmed activities per week; other, more flexible arrangements such as part-time, job share etc. will be considered).  The main departmental office base is at Waverley Gate, located in central Edinburgh with excellent travel links to surrounding areas.

Your focus will be leading and delivering approaches to health inequalities, health intelligence, public health improvement, and health and social care service improvement with partners in the City of Edinburgh.  Edinburgh is home to just over 500,000 of Lothian’s 900,000 residents. There are excellent transport links with the rest of Scotland.

As a senior member of our team, you would help shape and lead our partnership work in Edinburgh, while also sharing and learning from others across Lothian.  In Lothian, we are working to a place-based model, aligned with Health and Social Care Partnerships and Community Planning Partners.

Immediate priorities in Edinburgh include

  • COVID-19 recovery planning
  • Health and Social Care Partnership strategic planning, early intervention and prevention activities
  • Active participation in the Community Planning Partnership Local Outcomes Improvement Plan Group and significant contributions to other elements of the Community Planning Partnership such as the Children’s Partnership
  • Links with the city spatial planning and transport teams to pursue the health and wellbeing elements of the City Plan 2030 and the city climate strategy

This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate who can lead a team, inspire partners and demonstrate the importance of a health in all policies approach to addressing population health challenges and public service reform. A key skill set will be relationship building and the ability to build alliances to influence policy and decision-making with key partners. The post holder will report to the Lead Consultant, Population Health (NHS Lothian).

In addition to place-based work you will be the lead for at least one public health priority across the Lothian region, participate in our Public Health out-of-hours on call rota, lead programmes of work across the Health Board and provide senior leadership across the Directorate.  At present, this role includes responsibility for public health consultant leadership of tobacco prevention and control, substance use and sexual health improvement work.  Final remit would be subject to job planning discussions, considering skill mix across our team.

Candidates must be included in the GMC Full and Specialist Register with a license to practice / GDC Specialist List (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview) OR be included in the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).
