Raigmore Hospital

Raigmore Hospital is the principal acute general hospital serving the population of NHS Highland. The catchment area is geographically the largest and most northerly of any Health Board in mainland Britain. In addition, tertiary services are provided to patients from NHS Western Isles and western parts of NHS Grampian, making the total catchment population approximately 400,000. Raigmore is a modern well-equipped general hospital, and its relative geographical isolation demands higher levels of services than in most hospitals of comparable size. For example it is one of Scotland’s five cancer centres. Raigmore is also the popular second campus for the University of Aberdeen Medical School and home to the unique Centre for Health Science (www.centreforhealthscience.com).

The Department of General Surgery

The Department offers a broad spread of Gastro-Intestinal Surgery, including colonic and rectal cancer surgery, resectional oesophagogastric and hepatobiliary surgery and the full range of benign general surgery. The Upper and Lower GI cancer services are supported by weekly MDTs and appropriate cancer nurse specialists (CNS).

The GI surgeons provide the Emergency General Surgery on call service. Other surgical specialties include Urology (5 consultants), Vascular (3 consultants) and Breast Surgery (3 consultants). The department has seven Specialty Trainees on the North of Scotland General Surgery ST Programme, an Upper GI Fellow, two Clinical Research Fellows, and a CT1. The team is supported by 12 Foundation Year 1 Doctors and 2 Physician Associates.

General Surgical Emergency Receiving

The department receives emergencies including patients with abdominal pain, GI bleeding, intestinal obstruction, abdominal and polytrauma, head and chest injuries and vascular emergencies. Paediatric surgical emergencies are managed jointly with paediatricians. The department accepts inter-hospital transfers from the Rural General Hospitals, of complex or ITU-dependent cases. Neurosurgical and thoracic surgical units are available in Aberdeen, which lies 100 miles away but is accessible for consultation and for air transfer when necessary. There are three levels of surgical on-call rota: Foundation, Middle Grade and Consultant. The level of consultant support for middle grade surgeons out-of-hours, is high.
