A unique opportunity has arisen for a Highly Specialist Speech & Language Therapist to join the innovative interdisciplinary IDEAS Team (Interventions in Dementia: Education, Assessment and Support), based in Mountainhall Treatment Centre, in Dumfries. You  must hold a degree or equivalent in Speech & Language Therapy, be registered with the RCSLT and HCPC, and have significant clinical experience working with adults with communication and swallowing difficulties.

The IDEAS Team is a tertiary team within the Community Mental Health Directorate, providing specialist advice, consultancy and training to staff across Health and Social Care who support people with dementia who may be experiencing stress and distress. The successful candidate will work collaboratively in a small supportive team which includes a Mental Health Nurse, Clinical Psychologist and Occupational Therapist and an Administrator, to provide communication and swallowing assessments to people with dementia with complex needs who may be experiencing stress and distress. The post holder will also develop and deliver staff training and education on aspects of stress and distress in dementia.

You will have experience of working across health and social care partnerships, in care homes and care and support at home. Excellent communication skills and the ability to take a flexible, creative and enabling approach to problem solving are required. The ability to balance a wide range of priorities whilst keeping focused on the team objectives is essential. 

This post actively encourages working across the 4 pillars of practice and participation in CPD activities and offers the opportunity to further develop skills and knowledge in the field of dementia, in line with the Promoting Excellence framework to Enhanced level. You will have the opportunity to participate in statistical information gathering and audits and further develop leadership skills.
