The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) is a large teaching hospital with an established reputation for offering the best practice across a wide variety of specialist services. The pharmacy service at the RIE is committed to delivering high quality of patient care and participate in the ongoing service development in a patient focused role to optimise medicines use, support patient flow and contribute towards ongoing delivery and development of the clinical pharmacy service.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated pharmacy technician to join the committed and dynamic RIE pharmacy team. The post holder will be an important member of the clinical pharmacy team providing a pharmacy service to the orthopaedic trauma, elective orthopaedic wards and the Major Trauma Centre located within the RIE.

Trauma orthopaedics provides immediate and early management to patients requiring emergency care for orthopaedic injuries and illnesses. Elective orthopaedics provides planned surgical interventions to patients for painful joints. The Major Trauma Centre for South East Scotland provides high quality, multi-speciality care to those who experience major trauma within NHS Lothian, NHS Borders, NHS Forth Valley and NHS Fife with the aim of saving more lives and improving patient outcomes from point of injury to rehabilitation.

Multidisciplinary team working is essential to provide a high quality pharmaceutical service to these patients and the pharmacy team plays an integral part in the service delivery across the orthopaedic and major trauma wards. Pharmacy technicians play a vital role in both the pharmacy team and the wider multi-disciplinary team. The postholder would be expected to assess patients across inpatient areas to aid in the process of safe prescribing and medicines management. This post offers an opportunity to engage with service development and engagement with primary care sector to ensure seamless transfer of care at point of discharge.

Applicants must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), have a Pharmacy Dispensary Checking Technician (PDCT) National Qualification or equivalent, HNC in Pharmacy Services Development and Management or equivalent qualification or relevant experience will be considered.  If the successful candidates do not hold the HNC or equivalent they will be expected to engage in completing the appropriate post-registration qualification in post. Knowledge and experience of ward based activities such as one-stop dispensing and assessment of patient’s own medicines would be beneficial.  

You will be required to participate in the weekend and public holiday service rota’s at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
